INTRODUCTION Presbyterianism is a part of the Reformed tradition, which traces its origins to Great Britain, specifically Scotland. Presbyterian churches derive their name from the Presbyterian form of church government, which is governed by representative assemblies of elders. 26/09/2020
Background The issue of women in the ministry has been a vexed one historically. In many denominations, the ordination of women has been represented by some form of struggle. Someone once said being a female minister is like being a black women twice. A black woman having to deal with the challenges outside and the challenges in the church. Although there are more female ministers in the church now than in the past, the struggles are still as a fresh wound. We still struggling with gender inequality even years after the ordination of the first female minister. 26/09/2020
Background . Three central points support womanism. First, womanists understand that oppression is interlocking system, providing all people with varying degrees of penalty and privilege. Second, they believe that individual empowerment combined with collective action is key to lasting social transformation. Last, they em- body a humanism, which seeks the liberation of all, not simply themselves. - Tamara Beauboeuf-Lafontan 3/22/2025
AIMS GENDER EQUALITY: Womanist theology is a God centered , a carving space between Black liberation theology, feminist theology and womanist to speak to the specific realities, experiences, and needs of black women. Womanist theology has expanded to cover the multiple religious experiences of women of color.
Definitions Feminist & Womanist 26/09/2020
FEMINIST Feminism is a term that first came up in the 1900 s. Women were slowly realizing the need to fight for equal rights to join in on political debates. Why are black female ministers still ignored even during our times. There are many materials, research, theories and thesis written in an attempt to fight against discrimination in the church. However, discrimination remains high in our churches today. There seems to be a huge gap between theory and practice with regards to gender equality among ministers in the church. Feminism is a fight to change the stereotypes that so dictated their lives. In current times, many major issues have been won, but feminists are still fighting for real equality. 26/09/2020
WOMANIST The term Womanist is relatively new compared to feminism. Frustrated by the lack of diversity in the feminist movement, Focusing on issues like rape, wage gaps, and discrimination, they are trying to level the playing field between men and women. The movement was to be more aligned with black women s issues without ignoring the facts of racial and social discrimination 26/09/2020
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FEMINISM AND WOMANIST The biggest difference between womanist and feminist ideologies is their focus. Feminists are fighting male patriarchy usually found in the form of white males while womanists are fighting this discrimination in terms of their race, color and demographics. They are more accepting of each other s struggle and less radical in their protests. 29/09/2020

CONCLUSION Black womanist consciousness is formed from the matrix of race, woman- hood, faith, and community. Womanist consciousness not only addresses the negative impact of racism within the Black community, it also calls out the various forms of sexisms within the Black community and the Black church by Rev Dr K Kobo 26/09/2020
