  9. READ THE LESSON SILENTLY

  10. In internationally acknowledged Indian president Mr APJ Abdul Kalam mentioned a very important aspect of mankind s future energy crisis. He pointed out that the era of wood and bio- mass has almost come to an end. The age of oil and natural gas would soon be over within the next few decades. Massive burning of world s coal reserves may lead to a worldwide ecological disaster because coal burning emits the highest amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Ukraine s (former Soviet Union) Chernobyl disaster in 1986 has exposed that nuclear energy can be potentially dangerous too. So according to Kalam, the only solution that mankind can look to is the massive use of solar energy in future because it has some advantages over other forms of renewable energies. a speech at the 90th Science scientist and former Congress,

  11. Now why has Kalam put so much importance to the issue of energy? The energy sources have always been a major throughout history. The consumption has increased from annually 3 billion barrels in 1930 to annually 50 billion barrels today. In the next quarter century, the world s population is expected to be about 8 billion which is 30 percent Developing countries will grow their economies about two times faster countries. Global economic growth is expected to continue at 3 percent per year. Consequently, the global demand for energy will grow at about 1.7 percent per year on an average. It indicates a 50 percent rise of energy consumption by 2030. factor world s of change petroleum higher than today. than industrialised

  12. If the worlds daily petroleum consumption is 220 million barrels now, it will rise to 335 million barrels by that time. The present reserve of hydro-carbon energy resources is limited and it will not be sufficient to meet the future energy challenges of the world. And hence, leading have taken initiatives to tap alternative energy sources mainly known as green or renewable energy sources. The bottom line of Kalam s speech indicates that concern of mankind in the [Statistics from: Rex W. Tillerson] industrial countries 21st the century.

  13. Choose the best answer from the alternatives: Which forms of energies are most advantageous? (i) solar energy (ii) kerosine (iii) coal (iv) firewood (b) What is the former name of the country in which Ukraine was a state? (i) United States (ii) Soviet Union (iii) United Kingdom (iv) Russia (c) When was the Chernobyl disaster happened? (i) 1886 (ii) 1976 (iii) 1986 (iv) 1876 (d) What does coal burning emit? (i) Oxygen (iii) Sulpher Dioxide (ii) Carbon (iv) Nitrogen

  14. Choose the best answer from the alternatives: (e) The passage is about --------. (i) oil and natural gas (iii) environment pollution (ii) greenhouse effect (iv) mankind s future energy crisis (f) The world s population is expected to be 8 billion within --------. (i) 25 years (ii) 30 years (iii) 50 yeas (iv) 75 years (g) Solar energy can be ---------. (i) a beneficial alternative to our present energy sources (ii) more destructive to our environment (iii) a small source for us (iv) no solution to our energy-crisis

  15. Questions & Answers 1: What is Science Congress? Ans: Science Congress is an organization where scientists expose their research activities on science and technology. 2. What is the scientist Kalam concerned about? Ans: The scientist Kalam is concerned about mankind s future energy crisis. 3: What according to Mr Kalam is the solution to future energy crisis? Ans: According to Mr Kalam, the solution to future energy crisis is the massive use of solar energy in future.

  16. Questions & Answers 4. Why is burning coal ecologically disastrous? Ans: Burning coal is ecologically disastrous because burning of coal emits the highest amount of carbon than any other source. If a massive burning of coal goes on globally, our air will be filled with carbon gases. Then it will be ecologically disastrous. 5. Why does Kalam put much importance to the issue of energy? Ans: Kalam puts much importance to the issue of energy because the present reserve of energy is limited and will not be sufficient to meet the future needs of energy.

  18. Answer 1. Chernobyl disaster has exposed the potential danger of nuclear energy. 2. The energy industries have been a major factor for change throughout history. 3. The global petroleum consumption has increased to three billion barrels per year. 4. Major industrial economies have taken initiatives to tap alternative energy sources. 5. Scientists haveemphasizedthe use of renewable energy sources.

There are more words than necessary. suggested, radiates, would, effective, conducted, either, energy, affected, crisis, tap, were To answer the energy(a) . in the world, scientist, professor, and former Indian president Mr APJ Abdul Kalam has (b) .. that solar energy can be harnessed by establishing space stations in outer space in order to (c) . solar power round the clock. Mr Kalam said that the sun (d) . about 10 trillion times the energy which humans consume across the world today. If we (e) . able to extract even a small portion of this energy from the sun, it (f) . be sufficient to secure the energy demands of our future. Pointing out that space based solar power plants do not get (g) . by weather, the scientist said that thus it would be far more (h) . in efficiency and power generation than the surface based systems. Professor Kalam suggested that the energy should be transmitted from space back to earth (i) . through microwave or any other technology like laser. Careful research of the impact and safety concerns would have to be (j) . in this regard. a) crisis b) suggested c) tap d) radiates e) were f) would g) affected h) effective i) either j) conducted

  21. Summary/Theme of the passage The passage has been written about the use & crisis of energy sources. Mr APJ Abdul Kalam is concerned about mankind s future energy crisis. According to his comment, the era of wood and bio-mass will almost come to an end. Oil and natural gas are also limited. This crisis can be solved by using renewable energy sources. Solar energy is one of the renewable energy sources.
