Lesson Starter All sorts of families are represented in the media. List as many famous families as you can.
Today we will Investigate the purpose of the family and the roles within it. Identify ways in which roles in a family can change.
Task 1: What is a family? Whole class discussion What do we understand by the word family ? Is it a word that means different things to different people? What do people get from their family? (For example, emotional support, friendship.)
Task 2: Roles within a family Group discussion In your groups, write down as many chores as you can that need to be done on a day-to-day basis. For example wash the dishes, make the bed, and so on. Who would usually be responsible for doing these tasks, an adult or a child? In what situations might this change?
Changing roles within a family Family roles can change because: As children get older they may take on responsibility for household chores. As children mature they may want to take on more responsibilities to gain pocket money. When a parent becomes ill (with flu for example), young people will often do extra things around the house to help them.
Changing roles within a family But, family roles can also change because young people have to take on caring roles. Siblings may have a physical, developmental or mental health issue which requires a lot of parental attention. Parents may suffer from an illness or disability which means they may require support around the house or extra care themselves. What tasks do you think a young carer might have to do in these circumstances?
