APPROACHING THE AS UNSEEN QUESTION: DYSTOPIA Tuesday, 10 December 2024
FOCUS OF THE QUESTION: 1984 The passage from an unseen text. Contexts: Literary and Socio-Historical No reward for critics or the second text. 15 minutes reading time
ORWELL: CONTEXTS 1948, post war, London bombed out and semi derelict Worked in BBC as propaganda writer in war used to the idea of trying to control thoughts; ironically would have needed to airbrush the worst excesses of Stalin since he was an ally Fought in Ant-Fascist army in Spanish Civil War Despite family wealth was prepared to suffer privation researching ground-breaking works of social investigation such as Down and Out in Paris and London and The Road To Wigan Pier. Very much aware of the pressures on the less fortunate in society due to over bearing and ill considered government directives.
WHAT WOULD I DO? Read the question and briefly consider how I would answer it if there were no unseen passage Use the SCASI mnemonic to organise my thoughts 1984 S: imperfect future, poor housing, war, industrialised society, central punishment facility, golden land, bedroom etc etc C: Winston ordinary, cowardly finds moral courage, sense of moral right , rebellious, re-educated. J: rebellious, out-of-reach, betrayer? O B: plausible, cruel, cold, heartless A: community actions, individual moments of bravery, secrecy, conforming, betrayal, capture, punishment for misdeeds (thoughts), re-introduced to society S: 3rdperson omniscient, didactic at times, objective, simple narrative, look for key passages of high emotion or interest to develop further I: lack of identity, totalitarian danger, moral compass, individuality as threat to state, fear, lack of hope for the future .
Note question READ THE PASSAGE As you read, make notes using SCASI to establish links between passage and core text Note required references As you read, note down possible springboards into 1984 the euphemistic name for the punishment centre, the sense of fear of being different, the lack of a true identity
USE THE MNEMONIC TO STRUCTURE YOUR THOUGHTS One problem with unseens is that they can seem very open-ended. They aren t. Structural use of SCASI If in doubt use SCASI to help AO2 becomes context The threat to individuality can be seen in the setting of the passage when Rand refers to the Palace of Corrective Detention . This euphemistically named building recalls the Lubianka in Moscow, focus of Orwell s response to totalitarian rule and appears in 1984 as the Ministry of Love Continue to develop your response in answer to the question
