  3. Latin American Music Latin American Music describes the music of Central and South America and most of the Caribbean Islands. The music is influenced by Spanish and Portuguese and African music. The rhythm is the main focus of the music. The music uses lots of percussion instruments.

  6. Salsa Salsa is popular dance music. It originated in New York in the 1960s and then Cuba It is a mixture of various styles including African-American, Jazz, cha cha It is very lively and uses lots of percussion instruments such as bongos and maracas Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLdzb_8J_UU

  7. Samba An energetic dance associated with the carnivals of Brazil. It has 2 beats in a bar. A large drum called a surdo plays the pulse on the beat, with repeated rhythms played on smaller drums, shakers and agogo bells. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzRfPtT __TY

  10. Tango A very dramatic and passionate dance from Argentina. It has 4 beats in a bar. It features a syncopated ostinato and contains repeated accented notes. Legato phrases are contrasted with short stacatto notes and glissandi. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW71- sVyMzM

  11. Music Concepts Syncopation off beat Ostinato A short pattern of notes which is repeated over and over again. Legato Smooth Staccato short detached notes Glissando to slide upwards or downwards between 2 notes.

How many beats in a bar does a Samba have. 5. Copy out the Music Concepts on slide 10. 6. Draw a colourful poster of a Carnaval (use google images to help with some ideas) Extension: Use google to find and listen to some of the percussion instruments mentioned on Slide 4.
