Institute for Ethnic Studies Founded: 1972 The purpose of the Institute for Ethnic Studies (IES) is to encourage and sponsor interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service/outreach activities that are directed toward exploring and understanding the experiences of African Americans, Latinos, and Native peoples of Nebraska, the United States, and the Americas.
Our Three Programs African American and African Studies Latin American and U.S. Latina/Latino Studies Native American Studies ________________ 17 faculty in 6 departments: HIST /ENGL / POLS / SOCI / PSYC / MODL
Our Majors & Minors [33 credit hrs / 18 credit hrs] You can MAJOR in ETHNIC STUDIES (ETHN); OR You can MAJOR in LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES (LAMS); OR
Our Majors & Minors You can MINOR in ETHNIC STUDIES; or LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES; or AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES; or AFRICAN STUDIES; or U.S. LATINA/LATINO STUDIES; or NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES. {WHEW!}
Our Majors & Minors NOTE: Double Majors are actually common and very doable. For instance, it s not uncommon for LAMS majors to get a double major in Spanish, or Poly Sci, or History, or Economics, or Business, or . . . . Also, a double major in ETHN or LAMS or any of these minors look good on a graduate school application, if that s a
Our Majors & Minors goal of yours. So you might ask yourself right now, what connections does my current major have with ethnicity and diversity? How might one of these majors or minors fruitfully support it? Anyone here already signed up as one of our majors or minors?
The WHYs & Wherefores 1. It s a Small World : Think of the recent Chinese stock market crash: we now live in a GLOBAL village, a global economy, one in which an educational background in ethnic and cultural DIVERSITY is a big leg up. That s why I ve already emphasized the double major, for those budding capitalists among you majoring in Business, or ECON, etc.
Its a Small World In terms of careers for our ETHN major in particular, one of our fliers lists such job fields as politics, journalism, public relations, community agencies, civil service, urban planning, and the legal and justice systems. But it goes well beyond that, in terms of the potential benefits of a double major, or one of our various minors, as a crucial supplement to almost another other major, especially in the humanities and social sciences.
The WHYs & Wherefores 2. SOCIAL JUSTICE: now think of other recent news oh, like Ferguson & the Black Bodies Matter movement?; how about the ongoing U.S. immigration even anchor babies controversy?; heck, how about the Washington Redskins or the recent ceding of an Apache sacred site to a foreign mining consortium? If you have experienced any deep emotions regarding such human-rights social
Social Justice issues, this is your chance to make a difference in the real world. As for that real world, IES just received two new grants for our internships one that ll actually pay two students per semester for working with local nonprofit organizations that focus on ethnicity & social justice, and another that ll send one student every semester to NYC for our Diversity in Publishing internship.
Social Justice Do many of the things that Donald Trump says just really piss you off? Well, then you, too, could be in Ethnic Studies.
More Good News Hey, this class probably counts towards at least one of our majors/minors!
Thank You . . . Any questions? I have some handouts for yu . . . . Thank you much for your time.
