Engage students in a hands-on lab activity to observe convection currents in action. The agenda includes bell work about convection, a hypothesis on confetti paper movement in hot water, detailed lab procedures, drawing conclusions with CER format, and thought-provoking conclusion questions related to convection in Earth's mantle. This interactive session promotes understanding of heat transfer and fluid dynamics.

  1. AGENDA CONVECTION LAB BELLWORK (COPY THIS IN YOUR JOURNALS) CONVECTION CURRENT = IS THE CIRCULAR MOTION IN A LIQUID or air CAUSED BY HEATING AND COOLING.

  2. Question and Hypothesis Question- When confetti paper is added to boiling water, what direction will the confetti paper travel? Hypothesis- If ., then . because .

  3. CONVECTION CURRENT LAB PROCEDURES Fill beaker with 300 mL of water Put on Safety Glasses TURN ON HOT PLATE (HOT PLATE SHOULD NOT BE HIGHER THAN 4) ALLOW BEAKER OF WATER TO HEAT FOR 3 MINUTES. SPRINKLE CONFETTI PAPER INTO THE BEAKER OF WATER. PUT TWO DROPS OF DYE INTO THE BEAKER OF WATER. OBSERVE THE MOVEMENT OF THE CONFETTI PAPER. DRAW THE BEAKER OF WATER AND USE ARROWS TO SHOW THE MOVEMENT OF PAPER.

  4. Draw a conclusion CER Claim A response to a question

  5. Draw a conclusion CER Evidence Relevant data or facts that support your claim Observations that support the claim

  6. Draw a conclusion CER Reasoning Explains how convection currents work in the earth s mantle? Justifies why the data, facts, or observations support the claim Includes appropriate content concepts or principles

  7. CONCLUSION QUESTIONS LEAVE SPACE BETWEEN EACH QUESTION 1. Explain the process by which the water is heated. 2. Describe the motion of the water as made visible by the dye. 3. Why does convection occur? 4. When will the convection cease? Why? 5. How do Convection Currents happen in the mantle of the earth? 6. Explain how this process makes the tectonic plates move?
