Explore the concepts of conduction, convection, and radiation in heat transfer through an engaging video. Learn how thermal energy is transferred through solids, liquids, and gases, and understand the role of insulation in preventing heat transfer. Discover why hot water rises and cold water sinks, and how the sun emits heat energy through radiation.

  1. CONDUCTION, CONVECTION, RADIATION, HEAT AND TEMPERATURE VIDEO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maPt__CZ1cY Directions: As you watch the video, answer the questions that follow.

  2. CONDUCTION, CONVECTION, RADIATION, HEAT AND TEMPERATURE VIDEO 1. In the video, they showed a blue bin filled with water and placed a blue cup into the bin of water. Which had more thermal energy, the blue bin or the cup? Why? Explain. (The diagram below is similar) The bin or tub of water has more thermal energy because it has much more water molecules than the cup. 2. What is conduction? Heat transfer through a solid 3. In the video, they show an experiment similar to the diagram below. Explain if they were showing conduction, convection or radiation. Conduction- heat transfers through the rod 4. Explain what happened in the experiment. Why did the tacks fall off of the metal rod? Heat transfers from one end of the rod to the other causing the tacks to fall.

  3. CONDUCTION, CONVECTION, RADIATION, HEAT AND TEMPERATURE VIDEO 5. Why does a pot have a wooden handle on it? Wood is not a good conductor of heat. It will not aloow heat to transfer through it easily. 6. What does a wooden handle and a plastic cup have in common? What are they both called? Both do not allow heat to pass through them easily. Both are insulators. 7. What is convection? Heat transfer through a gas or liquid.

  4. CONDUCTION, CONVECTION, RADIATION, HEAT AND TEMPERATURE VIDEO Hot water Cold water 8. Draw arrows showing hot water and cold water in the pot of water above. 9. Explain why hot water rises and cold water sinks. What process is this called? Hot water rises because molecules spread apart when heated making them less dense so it rises, cold water sinks because molecules move closer together making it more dense so it sinks. Cold Air Hot Air 10. Draw how a room is heated and cooled by drawing arrows.

  5. CONDUCTION, CONVECTION, RADIATION, HEAT AND TEMPERATURE VIDEO 11. What kind of heat energy does the sun give off? Radiation 12. What is radiation? Heat transfer through empty space 13. What are some examples of things that radiate heat? Heat from a fireplace, sun, light, toaster oven
