What the interns say about their experience "I joined the care leavers internship scheme in March 2021, I was unsure what to expect and was very nervous when I received my start date. I previously worked in the care industry, so this was a daunting prospect as I had no previous experience in this line of work. However, I remember my first day, I was welcomed with open arms by my new team leader and colleagues and there were no questions too big or small. I was eager and excited for the challenge ahead. In my job role I make holistic decisions on several cases for customers to get personal independence payment, I also talk to customers and read health professional reports and hospital letters. This role has made me confident taking calls and I learn something every day! I am proud of the person I have become and what I ve achieved working within my job role and the amazing support and encouragement I have got from all my work colleagues." Thasani Ulakeswaran - Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) 6
If you are thinking about taking part in a care leavers internship my advice would be to do it! I feel like I have landed on my feet here thanks to the opportunity provided to me by the Care Leavers Scheme . I am doing work that is appreciated. I cannot pin-point one moment that has been my proudest moment so far, I am just proud that I am learning and developing new skills all the time. I am gaining confidence as I go because I finally understand that it is a process. The more you put into it in terms of your energy and focus the more you will get out of it! I remember starting here feeling as if I would not be good enough and I would not be able to learn and develop the skills required to do this job well. All these concerns have been put to bed after just 2 months working here! This is because I have a very lovely and supportive line manager who has been supporting me every step of the way and is truly open to hearing my concerns regardless of how big or small! I ve been told many times here that no question is a silly question which I feel I have asked many of already. You will be surprised what you are capable of and you do not need to know everything going in. I would say it is a great step for anyone who feels like they want to progress from where they are now to something greater! Just apply yourself, have the right attitude and you ll be fine. 7
