Who are these people? Nomadic, Semitic People Timeline: Origins: Mesopotamia to Canaan. Exodus is estimated to have taken place in 1450 BC. Resettlement in Canaan 1450-586.
Evolution of the text Pentateuch - Greek for 5 books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Most likely compiled into this 5 book text during captivity in Babylon following Nebuchadnezzar s sacking of Jerusalem in 586 BC. J Jawist source, believed to be earliest (circo 800 BC). Uses name YHWH, relationship with God P priestly source. Focuses on responsibility, ritual, law (circa 600 BC) E later D - Deuteronomical coincides with the book of Deuteronomy. Law
Names of God YHWH aka Lord. Alternate spelling: Jehovah. I AM a be-verb signifies an existence outside of time (and decay), always in the present. Relationship to circular understanding of time. More human style interaction walking, speaking directly, etc Elohim - el- is god im is a pluralized ending. Translates roughly to God of gods. May be seen as part of the evolution from a polytheistic to monotheistic understanding, compilation of spiritual forces with a king or head, but referred to in the collective. Stories involve angels. El Shaddai Often considered to mean Almighty. shadad can mean destroy, or overpower. Used in warrior stories. Shad can also mean breasts , associating with fertility and birth. A combination of war and birth, life and death = power over all.
