  1. eres Your Guide Toolkit for PAC Coordinator

  2. 2024 Statewide PAC Goals HEALTHPAC $165,000 The PAC fundraising goals for member hospitals are based on FTEs.

  3. Be a PAC Leader Hospital executives, managers, medical staff and trustees are encouraged to participate in the annual fundraising campaign. We hope you will consider being a leader through a generous contribution. Suggested contribution:

  4. Tips on How to Meet PAC Goals Lead by example. Make your personal contribution. Your support of HEALTHPAC demonstrates the importance of grassroots advocacy and the work MHA does to support its member hospitals. Designate a campaign coordinator. A successful campaign begins with good coordination. Designate a member of your staff to oversee the solicitation program and to be a liaison between your hospital and MHA. Identify previous and potential donors. All employees may contribute to HEALTHPAC. Capitalize on the ability of your for-profit affiliates to donate to HEALTHPAC. Vendors also may contribute to HEALTHPAC.

  5. Tips Plan solicitation activities. Advocate. Use facts and success stories that will appeal to your audience. Many employees may not understand how the PAC relates to his or her work. Explain why hospitals and health systems need to be heard in the General Assembly. Our PAC supports elected officials who support the health care industry, as well as helps combat special interest groups with opposing agendas. Recognize contributors. Encourage participation. Send thank you cards to all contributors.

  6. Tips The hospital CEO and other leadership may participate in MHA s HEALTHPAC fundraising drive and activities in the following ways. Make personal contributions. Inform the hospital board of directors, medical staff and all other employees during nonbusiness hours, using personal phone or email, that HEALTHPAC is worthy of their support. Solicitation materials may be distributed at this time. Attend PAC-sponsored activities and events during personal time. Do not make PAC participation part of an individual s job responsibilities, and do not suggest that PAC contributions are tied to performance evaluations or responsibilities. PAC participation, either as a coordinator or a donor, is completely voluntary.

  7. Compliance Matters For nonprofit and public hospitals Refrain from using hospital resources and facilities to solicit contributions. Do not make HEALTHPAC solicitations an agenda item for official staff meetings or other hospital functions. Keep the lines clear between actions taken as a nonprofit hospital leader and HEALTHPAC activities. They must be separate.

  8. Dear [NAME]: I am writing to ask you to join me in supporting HEALTHPAC (Missouri Hospital Association s political action committee). HEALTHPAC is used to help elect candidates who understand the vital role hospitals play in the state as part of the health care system and the positive impact hospitals have on the economy and the health of their communities. SAMPLE CEO Letter [HOSPITAL NAME] has a 2024 HEALTHPAC goal of [AMOUNT], which we would like to meet by [GOAL DATE]. As health care leaders, we can play a critical role in supporting hospitals and health systems by contributing. To help our effort, I have already contributed to [XX]PAC. Suggested contributions are 1/10 of 1% of your annual salary (e.g., $100,000 annual salary = $100 contribution). Please take a moment to fill out the enclosed PAC contribution form and mail it to MHA as indicated (or deliver it to [NAME] at the hospital). If you prefer, you may contribute online at https://www.mhanet.com/HEALTHPAC/. Thank you for your support of this year s PAC campaign. [NAME] Chief Executive Officer [HOSPITAL NAME]

  9. Dear [NAME]: You recently received a letter requesting a contribution to HEALTHPAC. I trust you already have sent in your contribution, but if not, I hope you will join me in participating in this important effort. As a hospital employee, you play a vital role in building relationships between [HOSPITAL NAME] and our elected officials. Your leadership is critical in communicating our position on various health care public policy issues. The PAC is another way the voice of Missouri s hospitals is strengthened. Your personal contribution is influential in supporting elected officials who are sensitive to our concerns and who make decisions that affect the hospital community and the patients we serve. SAMPLE Follow Up Letter Although completely voluntary, I encourage you to contribute to the campaign. Your contribution of 1/10 of 1% of your annual salary (e.g., $100,000 annual salary = $100 contribution) or more will help keep our issues and concerns on the political radar. Please take a moment to fill out the enclosed contribution card and return it with your contribution by [DATE]. If you prefer, you may contribute online at https://www.mhanet.com/HEALTHPAC/. Thank you for your generosity and support. If you have any questions, please contact me or [FULL NAME] at (XXX) XXX-XXXX or [EMAIL]. Sincerely, [NAME] enclosure

  10. Dear [FIRST NAME]: Thank you for your contribution to HEALTHPAC. Through your support, the HEALTHPAC is able to support state and federal lawmakers who are willing to protect public policies that preserve vital health care services. A strong political action committee is an important advocacy resource that helps ensure the hospital community has an effective voice. Your contribution truly makes a difference in our ongoing efforts to educate elected officials about critical health care issues and the impact their decisions have on hospitals and the patients we serve. SAMPLE Thank You Letter Again, thank you for your contribution. If you have any questions regarding HEALTHPAC, please contact me or [FULL NAME] at (XXX) XXX-XXXX or [EMAIL]. Sincerely, [NAME]
