INTRODUCTION TO
LEVEL 3 EPQ

YEAR 12 INDUCTION

WHAT IS THE EPQ?

A research/process based qualification on a
topic of your choice. It CANNOT be the same as
something that you have or are already
studying

It is the equivalent of half an A Level (28 UCAS
points = A*)

WHAT DOES IT
INVOLVE?

Planning and carrying out research on
YOUR
 chosen
topic

You can write a 5000 word report/essay
OR
produce an artefact and write a 1000 word report

Keeping an online production log

Giving a short presentation

WHAT DOES IT
INVOLVE?

Attending timetabled lessons where you will receive support
from your allocated supervisor

Although it is work you carry out independently you will be
expected to meet deadlines

Receiving information on skills needed to complete your project
efficiently and effectively, for example:
Time management and creating a detailed project plan
Referencing and creating a bibliography
How to evaluate sources
Analysing qualitative data

WHAT WILL I

You will develop an idea for a project that they wish to carry out and discuss their
ideas with a supervisor.

Carry out research to enable you to sufficiently develop project aims and

and issues
Carry out the project by achieving the aims and objectives you set themselves
Prepare and give a presentation about the project product and process
(including a question and answer session)
Evaluate the project process
Submit evidence for assessment (production log and project product)

You can learn about something you are
interested in but have not been taught
You can gain an extra UCAS points
(28=A*)
It will enhance a job, college or
university application
It will give you the opportunity to
develop/learn a wide range of skills

ESTIMATED TIMELINE

To Christmas: Choosing a project, project
proposal and approval
Jan- Feb:
Creating a detailed project plan and
researching
Feb - Mar:
Researching and producing your
‘product’
April:
Presentations (your ‘product’ needs to be
completed before you carry out your
presentation)
May:
Submission of projects

HOW IS IT RECORDED

The Production Log is a 15-page document that is used to record your journey
through the project process.

The Project Qualifications are process-based qualifications. The outcome (essay,
artefact, production) is important but the Production Log is just as important. It
charts your progress from initial ideas, through your research to your final
outcome and evaluation.

Each page indicates who should complete it (candidate, supervisor or
coordinator). A number of the pages indicate that they should be completed by
the candidate and have a section in the middle entitles “Your supervisor’s main
comments and advice”. This section should be completed by the candidate. It is
their opportunity to record and reflect on the advice they have received. Note
that students are not compelled to act on the advice they have been given. This
is their choice – they should be encouraged to explain why they are not taking
certain pieces of advice in their log.
