Enriching Social Science Teaching with Empirical Data
Manchester Dissertation Audit revealed that a limited number of students use quantitative data in their sociology and politics dissertations. The lack of skills and knowledge about available sources contribute to this issue. The contrast between British and American students in collecting data for final projects is discussed, highlighting the demand for expertise in analyzing large surveys. The assessment methods in coursework and essays are explored with a focus on the implications of reliance on essay-based assignments. The importance of incorporating empirical evidence in learning outcomes and reading lists is emphasized.
