The ISI and capacity building Our aim is to support you as professionals Not with your government or agency hat on With your hat as a professional statistician through Networks Mutual support Professional standards We do not want to add to the busy schedule of existing capacity building efforts by local, regional and international partners

  4. Capacity building in the Pacific There are many statistical capacity development opportunities for you with your agency and government hat on What professional capacity development opportunities exist for you with your professional hat on? Pacific Statistician Leadership Forum Pacific Statistics Methods Board United Nations e.g. ESCAP, Statistics Division, WHO, UN-Women, SIAP World Bank, IMF, SPC University of South Pacific

  5. Establish a voluntary body, such as a Pacific Islands Statistical and Geospatial Society, to strengthen the professional networks in the region, including with a wide range of countries on the Pacific rim such as The Philippines, Indonesia provide mutual support, including on maintaining scientific independence host events e.g networking at ISI World Statistics Congress (the 2027 Congress in Busan, South Korea is an immediate opportunity) foster cross-academic collaboration Broaden your networks beyond official statistics to other statistical domains. The ISI has 7 associations official statistics is just one The ISI has an idea

Voluntary associations require volunteers to drive action The idea needs local champions The ISI can provide mentors, networks, support, events, etc to build the professional capacity, but does not have a local presence in the Pacific to drive action The University of South Pacific and SPC are potential partners

What next Invite Pacific Statisticians to share their experiences of ISI / IAOS e.g. Statement in support of Fiji Statistician Discuss at the Pacific Methods Board ISI reach out and arrange a meeting for those interested in discussing further Invite SPC to speak about discussions held with ISI
