Traditional methods soliciting information from households Botswana is implementing the 2020 Round of Censuses Botswana Demographic Surveys the latest being 2017 Population projections based on census figures 3
.1 Selected Demographic Indicators from Censuses BOTSWANA POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS TABLE 1: 1971, 1981, 1991 ,2001 and 2011 CENSUS DEMOGRAPHIC INDICATORS; BOTSWANA POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS Enumerated Population Male Female Non-Batswana Botswana Nationals Abroad Male (000's) Female (000's) Population Distribution (%) 0-4 5-14 15-64 15-49 65+ Life Expectancy at Birth (years) 2011 1971 1981 1991 2001 2021 574,094 262,121 311,973 10,861 45,735 36,7 941,027 443,104 497,923 15,677 42,069 32,6 1,326,796 634,400 692,396 29,557 38,606 1,680,863 813,583 867,280 60,716 28,210 2,024,904 988,957 1,035,947 111,846 23,032 Preparations ongoing to do a census count in August 2021 11.8 11.2 27,9 10,7 16,8 11,4 9,1 9,4 17.6 29.9 46.9 39.4 5.6 55.5 18.8 28.8 47.6 40.8 5.1 56.5 14.6 28.6 51.8 45.5 4.9 65.3 11.6 25 58.2 52.0 11.7 2.09 62.4 54.6 5 5 55.6 68 4
.0 Population Counts In Botswana the preference is the population present count. Population enumeration takes place where they are found where one spend the census night. A census reference period is fixed and errors of double counting are minimized. 5
.0 What Improvements Can be made (a)Population Census/ Estimates Questionnaire - In addition to remote dwellers, the questionnaire could include disabled population ( vulnerable populations). (b) Population Census/ Estimates Questionnaire In section 2.3 in the Questionnaire on Population Estimates Part 2: Metadata, the need to include Population projections for inter censal estimates 6
.0 Civil Registration and Vital Statistics The births and deaths have been automated through the Births and Deaths Registration System (BDRS), while the National Registration processes are semi-automated, marriages processes are manual. The Births and Deaths Registration System (BDRS) is computerized networked, real-time with centralized database system. It is interfaced with the National Identification System (NIS). The unique birth registration number allocated by NIS to a citizen child at the time of birth becomes his/her national identity number when they become 16 years of age. 7
.1 Vital Statistics Comprehensive CRVS strategy in place Birth registration = 90+ Death registration = 70+ Annual statistical publications on vital statistics , nearly 2019 to be released. Botswana collects data on births, deaths and marriages. Statistics on divorces will also be published. 8
.0 Vital Statistics Topics/ Metadata Questionnaire (a)Additional Vital Statistics Topics - The information collected is comprehensive since it deals with common vital events - birth, deaths, marriages and divorces (b)Improvements to Vital Statistics Metadata questionnaire Legislation on CRVS - Acts and instruments governing the management of events and their registration. They vary in terms of the depth of coverage in registration requirements. 9
.0 Recommendations Need for harmonization of definitions A concept manual need to be developed to guide the compilation of the required indicators 10
