  1. 13thSPC Heads of Fisheries Meeting

  2. PCCOS Timeline 2017 : The 10thPacific Community Conference agreed to establish the Pacific Community Centre for Ocean Science (PCCOS) to be hosted at SPC and become a true flagship for scientific excellence and a dedicated regional science information and knowledge hub. 2019 : Inception of PCCOS with MFAT funding. Laying the foundation, 2021 : Implementation of PCCOS : Hiring og PCCOS Head and Coordinator

  3. PCCOS actions will be mainly divided along 1) internal SPC coordination actions, 2) external actions with partners, stakeholders, SPC members and 3) Provision of actionable ocean science products to SPC members for their ocean policy implementation and achievement of SDG 14 targets: 1. PCCOS aims at facilitating and promoting cross-divisional engagement and cooperation internally at SPC for a better-integrated service to its members and continued building of ocean science excellence at SPC. 2. PCCOS will actively contribute to strategic partnerships in ocean science with a large number of institutions and initiatives at the national level, regionally (particularly with other CROP agencies) and internationally. 3. PCCOS will coordinate the approach with government agencies responsible for implementing ocean policies and tracking progress against SDG 14.

  4. Improving collaboration and coordination within SPC to make sure that PCCOS is greater than the sum of its parts)... will better Provide access to ocean data, information and knowledge and Strengthen partnerships for ocean science, exchange between PICTs, and PICT voice at global fora and Develop capacity of member states to understand and use science for integrated ocean governance through policy and planning in order for More effective implementation of science-based ocean governance and management by SPC's members and Sustainable management of ocean resources for the Blue Pacific continent (wellbeing, equity, prosperity and resilience)

  5. EXAMPLES OF PCCOS ACTIONS INTERNAL TO SPC FAD/Wave buoys : PCCOS will coordinate the collaboration between GEM and FAME division to implement the installation of wave buoys on select FADs. These wave buoys will provide sea state information to fisherman and serve as a locating beacon for FADs managers. Coordination between FAME and GEM for the implementation of a circulation model for coastal fisheries management around Kiritimati. Improving distribution of ocean models and data via the Pacific Data Hub. Building the scientific rationale behind the SPC Research Vessel project.

  6. EXAMPLES OF PCCOS ACTIONS WITH PARTNERS Opportunistic Scientific Research Cruises for Oceanic Fisheries Program ecosystem studies, aboard the RV Tangaroa, in collaboration with NIWA and IMOS. Implementation of a Regional training centre for Ocean Acidification monitoring in collaboration with USP. PCCOS acts as the SPC focal point for the UN Decade of Ocean Science : PCCOS is envisioned as the Regional Collaborative Center for the UN decade. The Integrated Ocean Management (Legal-Science-Culture) led by PCCOS will possibly be an endorsed programme by the UN Decade. PCCOS is organizing the Pacific network of ECOP (Early Career Ocean Professional)

  7. FOCUS : WAVEBUOYS AND FADS Wave buoys are a key element in Early Warning Systems. Wave buoys are complicated to deploy and maintain. FADs benefit from years of experience in terms of mooring resilience. Wave buoys provide sea state information and FAD gear monitoring

  8. FOCUS : WAVEBUOYS AND FADS Test Site : Uitoe pass , outside the New Caledonia lagoon, 1500m water depth. Continuous operations since 3/3/2021, including impact of cyclone Niran (7.1 m recorded wave height)

  9. FOCUS : WAVEBUOYS AND FADS Next steps : generalize the design and increase the number of deployments of FAD/wave buoy systems. Benefits from a fisheries perspective : Real-time sea state information around FADs. FAD position monitoring in case of mooring failure. Long term improvement of FAD mooring through lessons learned.
