Sentence openers:

We can use sentences openers to add variety to our
writing, and make it more exciting for the reader.

Today we will be looking at:

2A openers and –ing clauses.

2A openers:

(Adjective, conjunction, adjective)

The conjunction can be any one of the FANBOYS (coordinate
conjunctions)
– For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So:

He ran around in the soft, crunchy snow.

Add a 2A opener to the beginning:

Exhilarated and carefree,
he ran around in the soft, crunchy snow.

You can also use conjunctions such as ‘but’ or ‘yet’ to show contrast:

Tired but determined,
she kept on going until her snowman was
complete.

Add your own 2A openers to the beginning of these
sentences:
(Adjective, FANBOY, adjective comma)

They treated themselves to a hot chocolate.

He wrapped up warm to venture outside.

She desperately wished she had a sledge.

-
Ing clause:

(verb, adverb,) (-ing, ly)

Wailing tremendously,
the toddler toppled over into a giant
heap of snow.

The two sisters threw snowballs at each other.

Laughing merrily,
the two sisters threw snowballs at each
other.

Add your own –ing clauses to the start of these sentences:
(Ing word, ly word)

He hid under the trees for cover.

The family built their very own snow-family!

He could see the icy cobwebs glistening in the sunlight, but
where was the spider?

She found the perfect carrot to use for her snowman’s nose.

They spotted tiny paw prints pottering through the
untouched snow.

Today’s writing task:

Can you write a paragraph about the pigeon impossible
story, using some 2A openers and –ing clauses?

E.G: 2A opener:
(Adjective, FANBOYS, Adjective)
Cheeky yet determined,
the pigeon stared at Agent Beckett,
trying desperately to persuade him to give up his precious
donut.

-ING clause:
(-ing word, -ly word)
Chasing rapidly,
Agent Beckett really needed to get his
rather important (and not dangerous at all) briefcase back
off that pesky pigeon.
