Engineering Updates and Fabrication Progress Report
Progress updates on engineering activities including gantry beam fabrication, roof penetrations, manhole ductwork adapters, and cleanroom infrastructure. Companies have been contacted for quotations and replacements found for certain components. Detailed design modifications and budget considerations are being addressed for various aspects of the project.

FD2 Installation Engineering Update Nicholas Joniak 11/02/2022
TCO Gantry Beam Fabrication drawings were created and sent to companies for quoting. Requirements included test-fit of both installation configurations in factory to ensure final assembly alignment. So far one company has come back with a reasonable cost. - During the quoting process, an open line of communication was made with the budgeting team. - Notations of the availability limitations of certain steel beam sizes were brought up. A comparable and readily available beam was found as a replacement and will be integrated into the next design update. 11/02/2022 Nicholas Joniak | FD2 Engineering Update 2
Roof Penetrations Fabrication drawings were created and sent to companies for quoting (FD1 & FD2). Two companies had responded that they were willing to quote this. - One company has since declined to provide their number due to the current state of the design. - A second company has found a mill that might be willing to provide numbers. The quotation team stressed the difficulties associated with acquiring the custom tube sizes at the quantities requested. Quotes were received for all the manhole radiation shields and penetration dust covers. 11/02/2022 Nicholas Joniak | FD2 Engineering Update 3
Manhole Ductwork Adapters A few companies were contacted to provide custom ductwork adapters for both the FD1 and FD2 manholes. - Circular FD1 Manhole: Two options were provided: A one-piece custom wye (32 lower connection and (2) 24 upper connections). A standard 24 x24 x24 wye with a 24 ~32 reducer. - Oval FD2 Manhole: A custom wye design was provided: (2) 24 upper connections with an oval lower connection that matches the manhole size. A round-to-oval adapter plate will bolt to the manhole flange, and the custom wye can be connected to this. - An alternate option would be to use the FD1 wye designs with the round-to-oval adapter plate. 11/02/2022 Nicholas Joniak | FD2 Engineering Update 4
Cleanroom Infrastructure Updated cleanroom truss was received. - Used to layout and quote tarps required for the cleanroom outer wall and curtain entrance. Lighting and power distribution for the cleanroom is being updated. The cleanroom furnishing and outfitting have been updated. 11/02/2022 Nicholas Joniak | FD2 Engineering Update 5
Cleanroom Infrastructure - Continued A preliminary TCO entrance has been developed for budgetary purposes. Egress for personnel will be though a permanently mounted vertical ladder and a rolling stair platform (for when tools need to be carried into the cryostat) A temporary platform created from Fermilab shield blocks would be used to load the scissor lifts and floor cranes into the cryostat. - An angle iron edge guard frame would be placed over the upper block edges. The TCO floor would consist of steel plates supported by a tube frame connected back to the cryostat (and supported by the cryostat insulation after it passes through the steel outer frame). A standard forklift ramp would then be placed on the inner side. 11/02/2022 Nicholas Joniak | FD2 Engineering Update 6
DSS Support Beam Fabrication drawings were created and sent to companies for quoting. Requirements included test-fit of both installation configurations in factory to ensure final assembly alignment. There is currently one quote for the support beam steel structure and one quote for the bellows assembly. 11/02/2022 Nicholas Joniak | FD2 Engineering Update 7
Remaining Quotes Besides the roof penetrations, the largest FD2 quote remaining is for the CRP support structures. - A single quote has been received, but it greatly exceeded the budget. - Currently one other company (Tritec) is working with us to get a realistic cost for these assemblies. Most of the BDE cable tray parts have been quoted, and a company has been sourced to quote the remaining fabricated pieces - FRP Rungs - Steel Top and Rigging Rungs - Sheet Metal Cable Shields 11/02/2022 Nicholas Joniak | FD2 Engineering Update 8
