EMIA (Export Marketing and Investment Assistance) is a program designed to partially compensate South African exporters for costs incurred in developing export markets, recruiting foreign direct investment, and more. Its goals include boosting SMME contributions to the economy, advancing BBBEE, increasing export market access, and bridging economic gaps. ACTUAL ASSISTANCE Assistance is provided on the following basis: Travel (economy class); Daily subsistence; Transport of samples for specific events; Development of marketing materials for specific events; Exhibition costs relating to stand rental, stand design and set up costs; rental of furniture Costs of brochures; Project funding. 7

INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPATION Individual Exhibition and In-Store Promotion Individual Exhibition (IE) Assistance is granted to individual exporters to exhibit products at recognised exhibitions abroad where thedti does not provide for a National Pavillion In-store promotion - Assistance is granted to groups of five or more SMME or HDI manufacturers to showcase specific South African manufactured products in targeted retail outlets abroad. 8

INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPATION continued Primary Market Research & Foreign Direct Investment Assistance is provided to partially compensate exporters for costs incurred in developing new export markets and to recruit new foreign direct investment into S.A through personal contact by visiting potential investors in foreign countries. Registration of patents, trade marks & quality marks Assistance is provided to exporters for costs incurred relating to registration of a product in a foreign market 9

INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPATION continued Individual Inward Mission Assistance is provided to S.A entities organising an inward buying/investment mission to enable a prospective buyer/investor to make contact with them to conclude export orders or attract foreign direct investment The assistance is now extended towards inviting a foreign expert within the industry for capacity building in terms of technology or skills transfer 11

INDIVIDUAL EXHIBITION ASSISTANCE Economy class return airfare 100% to Maximum of R17,000 HDI s & SMME s Subsistence Allowance R2,300 per day Transport of Samples R17, 500 Exhibition costs 100% of the exhibition costs to a maximum of R 50,000 including foreign vat in all regions Africa Region: 100% of the exhibition costs to a maximum of R 75,000 including foreign vat for enterprises exhibiting in North, East and West Africa 100% of the costs of marketing Materials to a maximum of R7,000) HDI s & SMME s HDI s, SMME s HDI s SMME s and Other size 12

  15. GENERIC EMIA DOCUMENTS 1. Valid Tax Clearance Certificate and Export Registration Certificate Certified copy of the Certificate of Incorporation or Certified copies of ID Comprehensive colour brochure or CD ROM 2. 3. 4. Latest Financial Statements or Three Months Bank Statements Export Marketing Plan 5. 6. Three Air Ticket quotations from three service providers 7. Three Freight quotations from three service providers 15

  16. MANDATORY CONDITIONS All entities should have traded for more than 12 months The entity must be a registered legal entity in South Africa in terms of the Companies Act, 1973 (as amended), or the Close Corporations Act, 1984 (as amended) or Co-operatives Act, except in case of a sole proprietor and partnerships. The applicant must be a taxpayer in good standing and provide a valid tax clearance certificate before EMIA incentive is disbursed. Completed applications should reach thedti two months before the commencement date of the event. Entities applying for EMIA financial assistance might be subject to a 16 site visit being conducted.

  17. LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS Individual Participation (Individual Exhibitions, Primary Market Research & Foreign Direct Investment and Individual Inward bound missions of assistance is limited to four (4) applications per calendar year. Participation in countries, which are members of the South African Customs Union (Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Namibia) is excluded from EMIA assistance. EMIA incentives are not available for events taking place in the period 10 December up to and including 10 January of each year. Participation in private exhibitions is excluded. 17

  18. APPLICATION PROCESS Application Applicant obtains EMIA application form and guideline from the dti website (www.thedti.gov.za) or from EMIA customer care line. Applicant may obtain further information telephonically, by e-mail or visit to the dti offices. The guideline should be read before completing the application form. Application Procedure The Applicant e-mail the complete application to: emia@thedti.gov.za. The completed signed application form with the supporting documents should be forwarded to EMIA by registered mail, courier or hand delivery 18

  19. APPLICATION PROCESS continued Basic Evaluation The applicant will receive an acknowledgement letter within 48 hours. A letter will be send within 4 working days requesting outstanding documents. The applicant will be given 5 working days to submit the documents. Adjudication Committee Technical evaluation will be performed for the complete application. Adjudication Committee convenes bi-weekly. Complete applications are presented to the Adjudication Committee Applications are approved, rejected or referred back for additional information. The decision of the Adjudication Committee is final. Letter confirming approval of the application and the claim form will be forwarded to the applicant within 15 working days. 19

  20. CLAIMS SUBMISSION Permissible Submission date of a claim The claim form and all supporting documentation, together with the relevant post-event questionnaire must be completed and submitted to EMIA within three months after the date of event from the approved business destination. Incomplete claims and claim items received after the three months will be rejected without exception. Customers will forfeit in principle the approval granted to them if they do not submit the claim form and all supporting documentation within three months after the date of event from the approved business destination. 20

  21. GENERIC CLAIMS DOCUMENT Invoices All invoices and proofs of payment must be made out in the name of the approved entity. Only invoices in English or invoices in foreign languages translated into English and certified by a sworn translator will be considered for reimbursement. In the case of invoices for promotional materials, please note that only those dated 3 months or a shorter period prior to the event will be considered for reimbursement. 21

  22. GENERIC CLAIMS DOCUMENT Air ticket and proof of payment Original or certified copies of the business/economy class air tickets, which must be accompanied by an invoice and proof of payment. EMIA clients will not be reimbursed for air tickets where Voyager miles were utilized. Passport Certified copy of the passport clearly showing: Personal Particulars (Passport Photo) Departure date stamp from S.A Re-entry date stamp into S.A 22

  23. GENERIC CLAIMS DOCUMENT Tax Clearance Certificate An original valid Tax Clearance Certificate must accompany all claims for EMIA assistance under all EMIA programmes. Only the original and valid tax clearance certificate will be acceptable. In instance where the company cannot submit a tax clearance certificate due to outstanding taxes with SARS, an IT88 form may be submitted with the claim. Documentation confirming bank details A fully completed original Credit Order Instruction Form with a bank stamp. A Cancelled cheque or bank statement on the bank s letterhead. Documents for transport costs of samples A copy of the SARS Export Release Notification or Bill of Entry and the copy of Airway bill/Bill of Lading Certified copies of the proof of payment. 23

  24. GENERIC CLAIMS DOCUMENT Other claim requirements Faxed copies of the claim or documentation relating to the claim will not be accepted. A commissioner of oaths must certify all document copies submitted as true. The only acceptable means of payment are: Cheque; Bank draft, Credit card; Electronic banking transfer Original or certified copy of the bank statement is accepted as proof of payment The following forms of payment will not be considered for reimbursement: Cash payments Book entries Credit Notes - Offset payments - Travellers cheques 24

  25. SSAS: PROJECT FUNDING FOR EMERGING EXPORTERS BENEFIT Maximum of R22,500 per project or R1,000 per event per participant Marketing material (eg. Brochures, CD/DVD s, banners, pamphlets) 100% of the costs to a maximum or R700,000 or R30,000 per exhibitor Exhibition costs Rental of Exhibition space Construction of stand, excluding interior design Rental of essential furniture Listing in official exhibition directory or registration fees Electrical costs Cleaning and security fees Local & International air travel Accommodation (Bedding & Breakfast, Dinner) Transport of samples (excluding cost of duties on products sold at the exhibition) Remaining amount to be utilised for other qualifying expenditure Maximum allocation per project : R1,7million

SSAS: PROJECT FUNDING SSAS: PROJECT FUNDING FOR EMERGING EXPORTERS FOR EMERGING EXPORTERS LIMITATIONS Assistance is limited to participating entrepreneurs only Entities participate three times only Minimum of 10 up to a maximum of 20 SMME s per project A product or service must have a local content of at least 35% to qualify for assistance Application for exhibitions must be submitted 3 months prior to project commencement date and those for missions at least 4 months in advance Development plan focuses on exhibition participation and missions (both locally and international) Assistance is limited to 100% of the cost of the approved project Exclusions: Visa, personal insurance, Subsistence allowance, Interior Design of Stand and costs of duties on products sold at the exhibition

SSAS: PROJECT FUNDING SSAS: PROJECT FUNDING FOR EMERGING EXPORTERS FOR EMERGING EXPORTERS QUALIFYING CRITERIA Have been operation for more than 12 months Comply to statutory requirements including registration with SARS for TCC, Export registration Certificate obtain from Customs and Excise and also with CIPC Be an SMME owned by person/s of South Africa nationality Participate in a structured export development programme. Focusing on exhibition participation and missions Have been involved in limited or no exports. Have an EMIA qualifying products or services
