Efficient Data Sharing at GaDOE
GaDOE efficiently and securely shares data between and within state agencies through the Statewide Longitudinal Data System (SLDS), encompassing various educational components. This system reduces duplication of effort, ensures data quality and consistency, provides timely information, and enables technology innovation. GaDOE also emphasizes student data privacy, accessibility, and transparency through implemented policies, model policies for compliance with FERPA, training sessions, and transparency practices for public engagement.

Student Data Privacy, Accessibility and Transparency Act Student information is important for educational purposes and it is also critically important to ensure that student information is protected, safeguarded, kept private, and used only by appropriate educational authorities to serve the best interest of the student. 20-2-661(6)
Student Data Privacy, Accessibility and Transparency Act GaDOE Privacy Implemented internal policies to ensure student data privacy Created model policies for school districts to comply with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Conducted training sessions (internally and externally) GaDOE Accessibility Created official procedures for gaining access student education data internally and externally GaDOE Transparency Publish all new student-level data elements for a public 60-day comment period. Publish all student-related data elements to website.
Student Data Privacy, Accessibility and Transparency Act Annual Report to Governor and General Assembly O.C.G.A. 20-2-664(6)requires the department to notify the Governor and the General Assembly annually of any new student data proposed for inclusion in the state data system as well as any new special approvals granted by the department regarding the release of student personally identifiable data.
