  3. WHO IS A VOLUNTEER? A volunteer is any person rendering services for or on behalf of the District on the premises of District property or at a school-sponsored or school-related activity on or off school property, who does not receive compensation in excess of reimbursement for expenses. The term volunteer includes a person volunteering for a single field trip or event that includes direct contact with students. Field trips are considered field-based instruction and an extension of the classroom. Parents and other adults participating in a field trip are considered volunteers and must comply with all volunteer guidelines and requirements. All adults are there to ensure safety, support student learning, and maintain the organization of the classroom environment. Field trips require specific orientation. Field trips are for designated students only. Do not bring siblings or other children while volunteering on a field trip. ~ Killeen ISD Guidelines For Campus Visitor X-A

  4. Program Organization The principal oversees his/her campus and designates a Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteer Coordinators guide program implementation. Volunteers will be provided a handbook of guidelines and procedures. Volunteers are carefully screened to protect students, staff, and other visitors on the campus. Volunteers will follow the identified procedures for their campus and the district.

  5. Volunteer Program Procedures Inform the Volunteer Coordinator if you have any special talents or have a desire for a specific type of volunteer assignment. Let your coordinator know if you are not able to volunteer on campus, but are willing to work on projects at home. Notify your coordinator or campus administrator if there is a conflict or issue of concern. Dress comfortably but appropriately. If in doubt ASK. ALWAYS wear your campus assigned badge or name tag so that you are easily recognized while working on campus.

  6. Matching Your Skills to the Needs of the School How much time do I have to give? How do I want to spend my time? Are there things I can do at home? Do I have unique skills that would benefit the campus? What if my assigned site does not work out?

  7. Ways You Can Help Assist with activities/materials (i.e. teacher learning stations and bulletin boards). Work with small groups of students for instructional support. Assist at school performances. Provide mentoring opportunities. Help plan school events (i.e. family nights). Support student monitoring (i.e. caf , hallway, arrival, or dismissal). Work with after-school clubs (i.e. dance, martial arts, yoga, or art).

  8. Know Your Role as a Volunteer Volunteer under the supervision of KISD staff. Attend available training opportunities. Follow the directions of the staff (i.e. volunteer coordinator, teacher, or secretary). Reinforce the expectations of the learning environment. Allow the staff to handle behavior consequences. Ask questions as needed.

  9. Volunteer Success Be reliable. Be on time. Be a POSITIVE Role Model for Students Set a good example in appearance, behavior, and speech. Respect all students and their parents regardless of socio-economic status, race, cultural background, heritage, religion, etc. Follow the policies and procedures at your school. When a question or concern arises, please contact the volunteer coordinator. Do not bring other children or adults when you volunteer. *The principal has the authority to make an exception.

  10. Field Trip Success 1. Confirm the date, time, and location of the field trip. 2. Dress comfortably, but appropriate. 3. Sign in at the school front office. 4. Follow the instructions of the staff. 5. Be prepared to support/assist the staff and students. 6. Reinforce field trip expectations. 7. Stay alert and proactive. 8. Remain in line of sight of the staff. 9. Report concerns or problems to the staff. 10. Allow the staff to handle behavior consequences. 11.Understand the importance of confidentiality. 12. When in doubt, ask questions.

  11. CONFIDENTIALITY Understand the Importance of CONFIDENTIALITY Do not discuss staff, students, or school affairs with anyone except the appropriate staff member. When it is necessary to discuss confidential information, do so in a professional and problem-solving manner and ONLY with staff who need to know. As a general rule, what is seen and heard in your area of service stays within the area of service. EXCEPTION: Anything that may negatively impact students or staff members must immediately be shared with the Volunteer Coordinator, the campus principal, or other available administrator.

  12. Volunteer Hour Calculations The Adult, Youth, and Senior categories are counted as individuals. The monthly hours are calculated by the campus recording procedure (i.e., sign-in sheet, sign-in book, or digital sign-in). The Adopt-A-Unit and Community categories are counted as a group. The total number of people are calculated as a flat number of hours for the group. For example, XYZ Battalion had 10 soldiers serve Thanksgiving lunch from 10:30 am-12:30 pm. The group will receive 2 volunteer hours for that time. For example, ABC Realtor Group had 5 people help with Meet the Teacher Night from 3 pm -5 pm. The group will receive 2 volunteer hours for that time.
