Reading Workshop
Reading in Nursery! All children will have a reading book and a reading diary. Reading books to brought back to school each Thursday and given out again on Friday. Children will read at school once a week. Please can you make a comment in your child s reading diary e.g. Isabelle really enjoyed reading this book. She could describe the pictures. She made predictions. Put a smiley face or a sad face to say whether they enjoyed the book or not and then sign and date.
How to read with your child. In Nursery all children will have a lilac reading book. A lilac reading book is a picture book based on discussion. They will not receive a book with words in until the Spring/ Summer term. They will have a Read Write Inc sound mat to help them recognise the pictures and say the initial sound e.g a apple.
Talk about the front cover- Title Page Let the children predict what the story is going to be about. Talk about the Author- person who has wrote the book. Talk about the illustrator- person who has drawn the pictures. Tell them to turn to the first page.
Look at the pictures. Get your child to talk about what is happening on the picture. Ask questions. Who- Who is in the story? Use the word characters. Where are they? Use the word setting. What are they doing? Get you child to predict what will happen on the next page. What do you think will happen next. Tell your child to turn to the next page.
Tips to help your child read. Look at the front cover and get your child to predict what they think is going to happen in the story. Tell your child the name of the author and illustrator on the front cover. Read the title of the book to your child. Make sure that your child turns the pages correctly. Look at the pictures on each page and talk with your child about what is happening. Make sure that you read the book from left to right . Ask the children who, when and where questions. Ask your child questions about what they have read.
