How to be better question makers Bishop Rob Wright, Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta Quick to look for solutions Often have a solution before we ve really asked the questions Cut off creative potential to better understand the situation Cut off dialogue Cut off potential for a collaborative process leading to change End up with answers that will not address the challenges we re facing
Jesus asked more questions than he answered Instead of being the answer, Jesus chooses to be the question the problem that directs our solution Bishop Wright 307 questions asked of Jesus Jesus asked over 100 questions Jesus only answered ___ directly We are often seduced into being the answer person/ people
Getting the answers is not the point Answers we get depend on the questions we ask How can we be more deliberate in the questions we ask? Jesus is too much the Jewish prophet to merely stabilize the status quo with answers.
Habits of Question Asking What are my real habits? Do I want to be right? when asking questions when being asked questions - e.g. the lawyer vs. the priest Pay attention to the questions you ask and those you ask over the next few weeks. Try to learn more about your habits Do I want to appear smart/ capable/ competent or understand the situation better?
Obstacles to Question-asking Power corrupts the process Are you willing to share power? Do you want to empower others? Can you accept that someone else may have a better answer than you? Do you really want the outlier answer? Are you prepared to listen? The important thing is not to stop questioning. - Albert Einstein
Catalytic Questions 5 Traits 1) Reframes the problem 2) Intrigues/fires the imagination 3) Invites other people s thinking 4) Opens up spaces for other answers 5) Is non-aggressive; conveys empathy/respect Are the questions you ask catalytic? Do they allow for others to share their wisdom? Do they shift the energy in the room?
