Summary of a life He was the youngest son and came from England in 1871 aged 17 In 1874 he selected new farming land north of Warragul so became a pioneer farmer Held the land but became a stock & station agent in 1884 with some success Newly married he made one trip to England in 1887 Highly educated, slow-spoken, mighty alert mentally, and endowed with a dry sense of humour. He was transparently honest and strictly honourable (obituary) Quite short; a proper gentleman (Cecile Jordan-Ellerman) Devout but loved cricket and horses Financial reverses meant he had to start again as a farmer in his 50s but this time he had 6 sons to help and was successful 3 sons became men of the cloth, and the daughter Ruth he lived with in retirement also married a clergyman!
The name of Lousada suggested an interesting ancestry My mother 1920-2007 was a grand-daughter of Edward Charles Lousada 1854-1932. She was born in Korumburra. She gave me a family tree showing Barrow and Lousada ancestry, and she told me her grandfather came from Peak House in Devon. 2 uncles Benjamin Barrow Lousada 1887-1954 and Horace Frank Lousada 1900-87 dabbled in family history but their family tree left a lot to discover. In 2010 I started on family history. I visited Peak House in mid-2011, and a 4thcousin John Bury organized red-carpet treatment at Sidmouth On the same trip I met Peter Lousada in London and Carlotta Barrow in Swanage Neither knew how the Lousadas got to England, nor of the origin of the Barrows, but shared data with me. Neither were on the family tree and neither was John Bury. In late 2011 I launched a website as a repository for collected data, as a working platform to share progress, and to attract interested parties. It worked! Many family puzzles have been resolved.

The family tree was deficient but I used it as a guide to build a genealogy in digital form on software having standard GEDCOM output Did research on ancestry.com for a period but also familysearch.com, geni.com and MyHeritage English ancestry was readily available especially through Jewish records before 1828 Australian data readily available online especially Trove newspapers SLV, RHSV and VPRO were used and also National Library and other State Libraries Collaborators and consultants have been vital especially outside UK and Australia
Edward Charles Lousada was in the 5th generation of an Anglo-Jewish family but was not alone in Australia ..

inherited Peak House in 1854 so Edward Charles Lousada knew no other English home .

WW1 he lost 2 English cousins and 2 sons on the Western Front
Links to Australian history He wrote down his recollections of early Warragul His daily diary of 1876 survives His notes show he knew his uncle Samuel Barrow drowned in Port Phillip Bay but did he know it was on 5 May 1854 or 14 days before his own birth? And did he know the Governor being farewelled on 5 May 1854 was Latrobe? His notes show he knew his uncle was Superintendent of Penal Establishments but did he know Samuel Barrow was the first Superintendent of Pentridge in 1850? Did he know of his uncle s role in Childs Riot on Norfolk Island in 1846? Or that his uncle had a father-in-law who was a leader of the Rum Rebellion deposing Governor Bligh in 1808? Did he know of his illustrious Australian Montefiore cousins associated with the formation of the ANZ Bank and the Colony of South Australia?

The rest of the story His financial struggles remittance man; his sons gave free labour; and their Army pay helped him re- establish in Korumburra 6 children produced descendants some are here tonight as are some Hall relatives His brother Howell Arthur also farmed near Warragul but became an industrious magistrate in the broader region and whose daughter Elle Blanche in 1903 married James McHaffie whose family for 20 years ran sheep over the entirety of Phillip Island! Overseas relatives some are very distant with common ancestors going back to Jamaica, Barbados, Livorno and Vinhais What happened before 1743? the Sephardic diaspora in this case centring on Amsterdam and Livorno.
