Courage What does it mean?
School Values Our value for this month is Courage. Your teachers will be looking for children who have been very courageous. Today I am going to tell you about an important person in History who was very brave and courageous. She did what she thought was right, even when her family and friends didn t agree with her.
The Story of Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born to William and Frances Nightingale, on the 12thof May 1820.
In 1845, when Florence was 35 years old, she decided that she wanted to be a nurse. Do any of you want to be a nurse or doctor when you grow up? Is anyone in your family a nurse or doctor?
However, there was a problem with Florences plan. Her parents were horrified. In fact, her mother was cross with her for wanting to do something that she thought was so dirty. It was hard for Florence to stick to her plan, but she felt that God wanted her to be a nurse and care for the sick. Florence s mother wanted her to get married instead of becoming a nurse. In fact, Florence s mother and sister were so angry that they stopped speaking to her. How do you think Florence would have felt? We are very lucky because we have the NHS, with clean hospitals and free treatment from highly qualified doctors and nurses. In 1844, when Florence decided to become a nurse, hospitals were dark, dirty, smelly and poorly run. Perhaps we can understand Florence s mother s point of view a bit better now!
In 1854, Florence travelled to Scutari in Turkey in order to help injured soldiers of the war. Florence worked hard to clean the hospitals and save the lives of the injured soldiers.
Florence soon became known as the lady of the lamp as she would continue to care for people throughout the night using a lamp as her only light. Why did she only use a lamp?
In 1855 Florence Nightingale decided to train more nurses lots of people gave money to help her make this happen.
In 1856 the Crimean War ended and in 1857 In 1859 the Nightingale school for nurses was built, with her help.
In 1883 Florence was awarded the Royal Red Cross by Queen Victoria for all her hard work.
Sadly in 1896 Florence became very poorly and later died on the 13th of August 1910.
It was not easy for Florence to do what she felt was right. People were against her. Sometimes, it won t be easy for us to do what we know is right. People will be against us. Florence found that God gave her courage. People find courage in different places. Some turn to family and friends. Some search within themselves. Some people turn to God.
Lets see if we can all show courage and bravery by making the right choices, even when it is difficult.
