  1. ECHLINE PRIMARY CURRICULUM EVENING P4 Miss Dickson

  2. WELCOME!

  3. OVERVIEW OF THE YEAR Swimming starts on 26thNovember for 6 sessions. Topics and learning will be detailed in termly newsletters issued by school. School trips will be arranged to support learning.

  4. ROUTINES PE currently Monday and Wednesday with specialist and Thursday with me. The Thursday slot is outside and we recommend providing a suitable outdoor kit in addition to their indoor one. Science with Mr Johns every Tuesday. Assembly on a Friday. If your child has any out of school achievements to share with the whole school, please do bring them in. If they want to share with just the class I will try my best to facilitate that on any day.

  5. HOME LEARNING Spelling Most weeks you can expect a focus spelling pattern or rule to come home. It can be revised in any ways you choose, and your child will be able to describe some of the ways we revise patterns and rules in class. There are several groups so other children may have different patterns. Numeracy Our number maths is known as SEAL. You will get a SEAL wall with ideas to do at home and when your child is ready, a new wall will be issued. You will also get home some ideas for non-number maths, either with this wall or sent home separately. Reading Reading books will come home regularly and you should discuss the text with your child, ask them questions and get them to ask you. Please encourage your children to read a wide range of other texts including storybooks, comics, non-fiction etc. Please ask if you would like more ideas about how to support your child in reading at home. Occasional other tasks may come home to support topic work. Home learning must fit in with your family life so we will give lots of notice if any task is due on a particular date.

  6. ASSESSMENT We collect lots of information about your child s learning from our day to day observations and small group work. Sometimes we complete more formal assessments, especially at the end of a block of learning. Your child might be asked to say, write, make or do to show us what they know. Sometimes the feedback is verbal, so please ask your child about their learning. They will also get feedback from their peers. Feedback is designed to help your child progress and will focus on the learning intention and success criteria of the task.

  7. MATHS AND NUMERACY Numeracy will be taught 4 days a week (not Wednesday currently). SEAL is the name of our numeracy programme. There are different parts covering: counting in different steps (1s, 2s, 5s, 100s etc) reading, writing, ordering and sequencing numbers addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies with concrete materials, pictorial strategies and mental strategies. Maths will be covered regularly throughout the year, currently on a Wednesday. We might take some time off (a week or two) from numeracy work to help us to really focus on some of our other maths topics through the year. Maths groupings depend on your child s needs and the topic and are regularly reviewed and changed as needed.

  8. LITERACY Regular reading groups, class novel and whole class reflective read sessions. Regular listening and talking opportunities in a range of pairs, groups, whole class. Spelling, differentiated follow up words suitable to the group. Regular writing lessons, creating short and longer pieces independently and in small groups. Grammar taught in context.
