Commitments in the EGD (in particular EU BDS 2030) To update the Soil Thematic Strategy by 2021 to address land and soil degradation in a comprehensive way and help to fulfil EU and international commitments on land-degradation neutrality To perform an impact assessment for a legally binding EU nature restoration targets in 2021 to restore healthy and resilient ecosystems including soil To develop a set of indicators for the progressive reduction of pollution in view of the Zero Pollution Action Plan To develop a Zero Pollution Action Plan for Air, Water and Soil by 2021 To address soil sealing and the rehabilitation of contaminated brownfields in the upcoming Strategy for a Sustainable Built Environment by 2021 To achieve significant progress in the remediation of contaminated soil sites by 2030 Environment
Commitments in the EGD (in particular EU BDS 2030) In terms of concrete progress on soil protection, the Biodiversity Strategy mentions the following commitments by 2030: adopting sustainable soil management practices, including as part of the CAP; Significant progress is also needed on identifying contaminated soil sites, restoring degraded soils, defining the conditions for their good ecological status, introducing restoration objectives, improving the monitoring of soil quality. Bridge EU - GSP activities (ESP contribution?) 1/2 SSM: A. GSP Protocol to assess SSM to Europe: adapt it to the European context, use it on European practices B. VGSSM: continue translation of VGSSM to all European languages; develop European adaptation of SSM; promote the adoption of sustainable soil management practices SOC: Voluntary implementation of international best practices in SOC management (GSP- expected Dec 2020) Salinization: implement international good soil management practices for salinization (from GSP); develop indicator on soil salinization, following GSP work (and in collaboration with JRC EU Soil Observatory) Soil pollution: follow up at European level on GSP Global assessment on soil pollution Environment
