EASTCONN OUT OF SCHOOL YOUTH Career Pathways CAREER INTERESTOR SKILLS SURVEY At this point in the Orientation session, you will complete one or more surveys that will help you identify a job or career that you are interested in. Even if you know what you want to do, it s good to confirm that choice with a survey. This will allow you and your teacher to focus the Customer Service content on examples from your area (for example, manufacturing or health care).

Make an account if you don t already have one. Your Career Advisor may have made one for you. Be sure to use your social security number for the account you will have limited access to CTHires if you don t.

National Retail Foundations Customer Service and Sales Credential NRF FOUNDATION NRF FOUNDATION Customer Customer Service and Sales Service and Sales The Customer Service and Sales curriculum is designed to help entry-level sales and service associates learn skills related to frontline work in retail (or any industry that values customer service and sales skills or any industry that values customer service and sales skills). Individuals taking the course will learn: Products and services Assessing and meeting customer needs Preparing for selling, gaining customer commitment and closing the sale The basics of store operations and inventory control The process of merchandising Internal and external customer service skills Customer Service and Sales is a classroom-based, instructor-led program that typically takes 40-60 hours to complete, depending on group size.

This project requires research into a company that interests you, or one that you would like a job opportunity with at some time in the future. This research will help you Learn to Earn, that is, to learn enough about a company so if you have an interview with them, it will be a successful one, potentially leading to a job offer with them. 1. Select a company that is of interest to you. 2. Visit and read their website and related websites and view any relevant videos on the company.

While you are reading and viewing, take notes and pay special attention to: Customer service-related items and policies. What makes that company successful. Their mission statement. What they are looking for in terms of employees (skills, knowledge, personal qualities). Information about anything that impresses you about the company. Why you would want to work there. What you have to offer them. And 3 to 5 questions that you would like to ask them during an interview. 4. Here s the FUN part you get to express your creative side by developing a Glog or PowerPoint presentation about the company that you will display and present to your peers. 5. Your poster must contain the bulleted items listed above.

  15. EASTCONN OUT OF SCHOOL YOUTH Job Development Participants who have successfully completed Customer Service class qualify for a paid internship All employment documents completed during customer service (resume, practice application, interviewing skills), so participants are ready to go

In School Youth Employment and Training Program Historically, about 375 income eligible youth between the ages of 14-21 learn about work and training in New London, Norwich, Windham and Danielson labor markets This is a collaborative effort between EASTCONN, EWIB, New London Youth Affairs and Norwich Human Services Youth from the entire Eastern Connecticut region are served.

The ability to navigate the complex life and work environments in the globally competitive information age requires students to pay rigorous attention to developing adequate life and career skills.   18. Labor Laws U.S. Department of Labor - Youth Rules! Connecticut Youth Employment Labor Laws We use the above resources to help us teach youth about the importance of workplace safety. Youth agency staff meet with work sites before, during and after the internship.

  20. Financial Literacy Local banks are a great resource Savings Institute, People s Bank and Chelsea Groton attend our orientations to teach youth about savings and how to open an account. In addition, we use many resources throughout the summer to teach the youth EverFi online simulations JIST Personal Financial Literacy Lifestyle Math and K-12 Financial Planning

In School Youth Employment and Training Program Program outcomes include: 96% of youth achieved an attendance rate of 85% or better; 95% of in-school youth returned to high school, obtained employment or enrolled in post-secondary school after completion of the program; 96% showed an increased understanding of workplace responsibilities based on work-readiness instruction.

In School Youth Employment and Training Program Over 120 businesses partner with our program: The Garde Arts Center, Douglas Manor Nursing Home, the Slater Museum, Questers Way, Backus Hospital, Steppingstones Day Care and Early Learning Center, Windham GROW, CLiCK, Eastern Connecticut State University, Quinebaug Valley Community College, local towns and schools and more. Job functions may include medical records management, patient care, clerical, recreation, library aides, museum aides, maintenance, customer service, technology assistance and computer repair.

  23. Testimonials Our partnership reflects our desire to reinforce work readiness skills development and core employability skills to youth while also mentoring them in a career area. They learn so much through their participation in your program as well as the benefit is affords families, it is a win/win situation. The program also provides a training opportunity and we are happy to have been able to offer them paid positions. So many of the youth have left a positive lasting impression on the staff and children here. I loved getting a chance to work in a human service area and helping all types of different kids and keeping smiles on their faces. I think the youth employment program did a great job helping me and the other youth-I realize I can take on more than I thought, and that working hard pays off. Thank you for the experience.
