Brief History of Chess Chess has been dated back roughly 1500 years (approx. 500 A.D.) Originated in India Then spread to Persia and Europe
Chess Board Setup Your right side end square should be white White king should be in black square and vice versa
General Rules of Chess The goal of the game is to capture or trap your opponent s King; called checkmate White always moves first & players take alternating turns, moving one chess piece at a time Each chess piece has its own movement A piece may capture an opponent s piece or move to an unclaimed square A piece is captured by landing on the appropriate square with the moving piece and removing the defending piece from play
Chess Pieces The Pawn Can only move forward From its original starting position it can move two spaces If it is not in its original position it can only move one space Can only capture one square diagonally forward
The King Can move one square in any direction The main chess piece The only chess piece that cannot be captured and removed from the board during the game The side who s King is in checkmate first, loses
The Rook Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically You may hear Rooks referred to as Castles, if you are new to the game The Rook is a powerful piece that can be used with the King in a move called castling
The Bishop Moves any number of squares diagonally. There are two bishops for each player, one black and one white.black bishop can only move in black diagonals and white bishop in white
The Queen The most powerful piece, it moves like the Rook and Bishop combined Moves any number of squares diagonally, vertically, or horizontally Important to keep her safe develop your Knights and Bishops into strategic positions before launching an attack with your Queen Don t hide her in a corner, she is most effective when she has access to a wide area of the board
The Knight Moves from one corner to another in any 2x3 set of squares(L shaped jump) It is the ONLY chess piece that can jump over another chess piece Are most effective in the centre of your board
