Beaumont Neuro Benchmarking Group established in 2020 to improve tracheostomy management. Audited care, identified inconsistencies, and developed a care bundle for standardized practice. Key benefits include tick box documentation, numerical scoring, and a weaning plan. Successful pilot trial on two wards led to hospital-wide implementation, enhancing evidence-based care and individualizing patient treatment.

  2. Beaumont Neuro Benchmarking Group was established in 2020 in order to advance local policy in conjunction with the National Neuroscience Benchmarking Group (NNBG) in the UK. Background Advance knowledge, policy and standardise practice in tracheostomy management through collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Aim Improve clinical effectiveness and minimise risk for tracheostomy management. To initiate and implement change the care documentation. Objectives We audited our Tracheostomy care using the NNBG audit tool. The results of the audit were positive. However, inconsistencies in the documentation were identified. Audit Using the PDSA cycle in creating our care bundle in conjunction with the tracheostomy working group and Centre of Education in Beaumont Hospital. Care Bundle A care bundle aims to tie a collection of interventions together into a cohesive unit that must be adhered to for every patient, every time. (HSE, 2020)

  3. Tracheostomy Care Bundle Key Benefits: Tick box on care document Use numerical scoring on care record Succinctly identifies required care Key revelant sections User friendly Time efficient Weaning plan included MDT approach to care

  4. Results and Recommendations Following a successful pilot trial on 2 wards, the bundle will now be implemented throughout Beaumont hospital. Implementation of the tracheostomy care bundle has enhanced the incorporation of evidence based practice in the clinical setting. The care bundle now in place ensures that a standardised model of care is being utilised when caring for patients with a tracheostomy. Use of the care bundle ensures individualised care is provided to every patient, every time. Thank you
