CHW Definitions CHW Definitions Differences in definitions are around cultural competency, advocacy, and behavior change CHR & Promotores under the community health worker umbrella that reflect the diverse communities served Some states include titles specific to certain health issues or populations HIV Peer Counselor Violence Prevention Professional in California.
Code of Ethics Code of Ethics 2008 Definition by The American Association of Community Health Workers Adopted or adapted by many states to fit their needs Differences focus around cultural humility, legal obligations, and conflict of interest All emphasis honesty, confidentiality, cultural humility and building trust within community served
Board Oversight Board Oversight Typically housed within public health departments and advised by a CHW committee or association Advisory boards usually have CHW representation, some with majority CHW representation Some states have private boards that oversee certification of CHWs & aligned fields such as: Peer support Doulas Prevention specialists
CHW Certification CHW Certification Multiple pathways to certification: Experience Training Apprenticeships Grandfathering process Background checks are required by South Dakota & Oregon while other states leave background checks up to CHW employers Reciprocity of certification between states varies Commonalities: Emphasis on training & experience Many certification requirements are tailored and tied to Medicaid reimbursement
CHW Associations CHW Associations Organizational structures & funding vary Paid staff or volunteers Advisory Board Grants, 501(c)3 status Common goals of: Collaboration Training Advocacy Community Engagement
