Designing Your PhD Odyssey Plan Activity
Create an Odyssey plan for your PhD journey by identifying academic milestones, personal, and professional goals. Organize the academic milestones using sticky notes across the years, and develop alternate life plans with varying themes on separate slides. Evaluate each plan's feasibility, coherence, likability, and confidence levels to ensure alignment with your resources and aspirations. Consider moving degree requirements to align with your envisioned paths and continuously assess the plan's suitability as you progress.

Designing your PhD: Odyssey plan activity Part 1: Academic milestones / degree requirements i. Identify your academic milestones ii. Pull the pre-created academic milestones (yellow sticky notes ) into the correct year within the Odyssey plan on slide 2 (stretch the milestones across multiple years as needed, or create copies). iii. If needed, write in your own academic milestones on the create your own yellow sticky notes and pull them into the correct year within the Odyssey plan on slide 2. Create additional sticky notes as needed. iv. Once completed copy these sticky notes onto the same place in your Odyssey plans on slide 3 and slide 4. Part 2: Personal and professional plans and goals i. Create a title for each of your Odyssey plans (alternate futures) on slides 2-4. i. Remember, these should all be completely different; consider one academic, one industry/public sector, and one wild idea ii. Add additional plans or goals into each of your three Odyssey plans (slides 2-4) to complement the academic milestones already there. To do so, pull the blue, orange and green pre-created sticky notes (or your own creation) over to the year you wish to complete it. i. Try to include at least one personal (green) and one professional development (blue) item in each year ii. Consider if you need to move around your degree requirements based on the theme of the Odyssey plan iii. Evaluate each alternative futures using the dashboard i. Resources: Do you have the objective resources (time, money, skills, contacts) to pull this off? ii. I like it: How do you feel about this plan? iii. Confidence: Are you full of confidence that you can pull this off? iv. Coherence: Does that plan make sense with itself? And, is it consistent with who you are?
