Why Are We Talking About
Recycling?

It’s About the Money!

Cost of Trash vs. Recycling

Trash

Tipping fee $23.00 per 8 yd3
dumpster
($276/month)
Pick-up fee $17.05 (per 8 yd3)
per pull
($204/month)
Monthly trash cost $276
(tipping) +$204 (pick-up) = $480

Recycling

Tipping Fee – $0
Pick-up Fee $16.43 (per 8 cubic
yard
Monthly Recycling cost $197.18
(3x per week)
$5,760/year

Environmental Reasons

It is a world-wide problem

Successful Program Elements

Pieces of the Puzzle

Recycling Bin Placement

1 desk topper per office/desk/other space
Large units in corridors.
Cafeterias
Libraries
Copy rooms/work rooms
Art rooms
Interior entrances
Concession stands

Co-Location (Your New Word)

Trash cans and recycling cans next to each
other.

Recycling can is always placed on the right.

Out door cans being placed at entry
locations.

Indoor units for corridors being purchased.

Education/Public Relations

Standardized signage placed around building.
Verbally remind/invite people to recycle.
Post recycling stats and goals in prominent news sources (weekly
announcements, PTA newsletter, daily announcements
Interesting fun fact as a part of presentations.
Remember that recycling may not be part of someone’s “culture” or
habits.
Remind staff that School Board policy requires everyone to
participate.

Get Help

Assign a coordinator to
oversee the effort.

Coordinator assembles a
team of staff (teachers, food
service, librarian,
assistants)to assess and
monitor in their areas of the
building.

Assess Your Opportunities. Ask yourself:

Where do people gather or meet for activities?
Would they reasonably have materials to put in trash/recycling?
Count the number of spaces that need bins and send to Kerm.
Is there adequate signage? If I came into this building for the first
time, would I know where the recycling bins are located?
Are there containers placed during large events (games, concerts, pep
rallies, concession stands, staff luncheons)?

Communicate Your Story

“No one will tell your story like you will.”
Gladis Bourdouane

Put announcements in newsletters, PA announcements, pep rallies,
game announcements, staff meetings, Twitter.

Appeal to people’s better selves.

Talk about the successes in the program (stats, etc.)

Communicate Your Story

Talk about the successes in the program (stats, etc.)

Thank people for recycling.

Show/distribute clips from Arlington Green Scene

Use curriculum connections.

Ecological message of the day. (Stratford Program)

Curriculum Connections

Use recyclable materials in art projects. (Art Department)
Recycling, human impact on the environment, decomposition are
part of the science curriculum.
Students write a song or poem about recycling and teach it. ABA form
is easiest to remember. (Music/English)
Graph the amount of materials collected. (Math) Map out where
recycling and trash goes.
Read books in which recycling is a subject. (Library Services)

Changes in the Program

Singlestream (all recyclables together) is your first new vocabulary word.
All recycling dumpsters plaquared with a bi-lingual text and picture sticker.
Co-location (your second new vocabulary word) is required per county
code.
Trash and recycling are now being weighed and tabulated.
Data regarding diversion rates by location will be posted on the APS
website.
Goal for each location: 2.25 pounds per person per month per building
(employees and students as of 9/30).
Standardized posters for each building.

Question

True or False: The carpet backing and yard used to make the
carpeting in your school is manufactured from old carpet.

Answer

True
Our carpet manufacturer picks up the carpeting removed from our
schools and takes it back to the mill.
The carpet backing is shredded and then is combined with some virgin
material to form new backing. The nylon yarn is removed from the
backing, stripped of color, melted, dyed and spun to make new carpet
fiber.

Question

How much is energy is saved in recycling aluminum cans vs. making
cans from scrap.

Answer

90%.

Bauxite is found primarily in Africa, South America and Australia.
Energy cost estimates include mining/processing the bauxite,
transportation to the United States, as well as the process of turning
raw materials into cans.
