In high school, study time outside of class is minimal, with a focus on last-minute test preparation. Assigned readings are often discussed in class. In college, students are expected to study independently, review class notes regularly, and draw conclusions from assigned readings. Class schedules in college include various activities like group work, clubs, and online classes, requiring a more proactive approach to time management.

  1. High School vs. College: A Comparison of What to Expect Part III: Studying

  2. High School College Study time outside of the classroom varies and may be as little as 1 3 hours per week per class. Students generally need to study at least 2 3 hours outside of class for each hour in class. Some classes only require last-minute test preparation to succeed. With a 12-hour course load, that means 24 36 hours of studying per week.

  3. High School College Students are expected to read short assignments that are discussed and retaught in class. Substantial amounts of assigned reading may never be directly addressed in class.

  4. High School College Students seldom need to read anything more than once, and sometimes just listening in class is enough. Students need to review class notes and reading assignments regularly.

  5. High School College It is up to the student to read the assigned material and draw conclusions from it. Students are usually explicitly told what they should be learning from assigned readings. Professors lecture and make assignments based on the assumption that students have already done so.
