Overview of the Thesis In Research Course Directed Reading and Research (DRR) format; highly independent Duration of course is one semester either Fall or Winter (spring/summer is not an option) Requirements include: Basic background in research methods Completed the COUN 0680: Research Methods course with high standings Clear idea of a research topic of interest Permission granted by the instructor

Course Description Students complete a major research proposal in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy that demonstrates their ability to formulate a research question, use existing peer reviewed research studies to develop a well-structured literature review and methodology section, and draft an ethics proposal.

Learning Outcomes Develop a clear and testable research question Complete a comprehensive literature review Devise a research methodology that is scientifically sound Prepare a Research Ethics Board (REB) application Present an APA formatted research report including: Abstract, Introduction and Methods Sections Provide a critical reflection on the integration of the research topic with a theological framework

  7. Required Readings Reading requirements for DRR courses are higher than for classroom courses, normally 2000 pages of reading. Required readings consist of both peer reviewed research articles and book chapters pertaining to each individual student s research topic American Psychological Association (2010). Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6thEd). Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association.

  8. Course Requirements & Assignments Attendance & Participation in Weekly/Biweekly Meetings Research Portfolio Draft Assignments of the Literature Review & Methods Sections Ethics Proposal (Application) Final Research Report

General Course Schedule Weeks 1-2: Identifying the Research Topic and Narrowing down the Research Question Weeks 3-5: Conducting a comprehensive literature review and literature map Weeks 6-8: Designing the research methodology (will be quantitative design) Weeks 9-10: Ethics application and procedures Weeks 11-12: Discussion on Integration and Final Revisions of the thesis project

How to Apply for the Course First step will be to speak to the instructor (Dr. Helen Noh) to receive permission to APPLY for the Course (for the following semester) Second step, if permission is granted, student will go to Tyndale.ca Academics Seminary Graduate Program Directed Reading and Research Course Request DRR Course-->Fill out and Submit the Request Form (ONLINE) Third step will be to wait for confirmation of acceptance (will be based on student standing and available space) Fourth, for those accepted to take the course for the following semester, there will be a mandatory meeting before the end of the current semester (to be determined with instructor) PLEASE NOTE: SPACE IS VERY LIMITED FOR THIS COURSE EACH SEMESTER

  11. FAQ? Is there a deadline to apply for the following semester? Yes, the deadline to apply will be DECEMBER 1, 2016 for those interested in taking the DRR course in Winter 2017 For those interested in applying for Fall 2017, deadline for the application will be APRIL 1, 2017 Can I take this course after I graduate from the program? Yes, all alumni are entitled to take courses at Tyndale upon graduation; however, due to the special circumstances around this course, first priority will be given to current students in the program
