Information about ESL Classes starting Fall 2020 Only for Level 50 [Beginning] through Level 3 [High-Intermediate]: Students will have the option to take the class for credit or non-credit; Students will study & learn exactly the same materials in credit & non-credit classes; There will be credit & non-credit students in the same class; Assignments, tests and expectations for both credit & non-credit students will all be the same!
New Non-Credit Course Options Level Beginning High-Beginning Intermediate High-Intermediate Pronunciation Digital Tools ESL Skills Support [Tutoring] Courses ESL-850N, ESL-851N ESL-823N, ESL-843N, ESL-863N, ESL-883N ESL-826N, ESL-846N, ESL-866N, ESL-886N ESL-829N, ESL-849N, ESL-869N, ESL-889N ESL-835A-N, ESL-835B-N ESL-811N ESL-810N
Understanding Course Numbers Starting in Fall 2020, there will be two versions of each class from Level 50 through Level 3: a credit version and a non-credit version. These classes will be taught together, in the same classroom, by the same teacher. On the class schedule, the non-credit courses will begin with the number 8 and end with the letter N : for example, Writing 1: Non-credit version: ESL-883N Credit version: ESL-183
Comparing Non-Credit & Credit Classes Non-Credit Credit Free Costs money Earn a non-credit certificate Earn a credit certificate Can repeat a class Cannot repeat a class you pass with an A, B or C Grades: - Pass, OR - Satisfactory progress, OR - No pass Grades: - Letter: A/B/C/D or F OR - Pass/No pass No financial aid CA resident requirement for financial aid No units on transcript Earn units on transcript No CA Resident requirement Non-resident tuition without CA residency
Certificates in the ESL Department You can work towards a credit or a non-credit certificate in the ESL Department. Below is a list of the different certificates we offer. Non-Credit Certificates Credit Certificates Beginning Certificate [Level 50/51] High-Beginning Certificate [Level 1] Intermediate Certificate [Level 2] High-Intermediate Certificate [Level 3] High-Beginning Certificate [Level 1] Intermediate Certificate [Level 2] High-Intermediate Certificate [Level 3] Advanced Certificate [Levels 4/5] ESL Pronunciation Certificate ESL Pronunciation Certificate Digital Tools + Tutoring Certificate for ESL Students
Financial Aid Information You cannot qualify for financial aid if you take only non-credit classes. If you take some credit classes, you may qualify for financial aid. For more information, send an email to financialaid@contracosta.edu or call 510- 215-6026.
Graduation & Transfer Information If you are planning to graduate from CCC and/or transfer to a 4-year college, please contact a Counselor with any questions about credit and non-credit classes. What if I want to change from credit to non-credit OR from non-credit to credit? Before you register for your classes, you must decide which option you want to take credit or non-credit. If you want to change your class from credit to non-credit OR from non-credit to credit, you can do it any time before Friday, September 4, 2020. After that date, you will not be able to change your course selection.
