This study conducted at Pimlak Moonpo Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Patronage Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maitree Inprasitha, Khon Kaen University, investigated the suitability of a math test for Thai 3rd graders. The study involved translating instruments into Thai, administering tests in both English and Thai versions, and analyzing student responses to identify areas of difficulty. Results showed that out of 19 test items, 10 were suitable for Thai 3rd graders, with an average score of 5.36. Challenges included order of operations and unit conversions. The study sheds light on the nuances of math testing for young learners in the Thai education system.

  1. TEST FOR 3RD GRADERS IN THAILAND: COMPARATIVE STUDY Pimlak Moonpo Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Patronage Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maitree Inprasitha Khon Kaen University Dr. Narumon Changsri Khon Kaen University Phattaraphong Kunsrida Center for Research in Mathematics Education Khon Kaen University

  2. The comparative study collaboration includes the necessity to have instruments translated in Thai

  3. THE TEST IN ENGLISH VERSION THE TEST IN THAI VERSION TRY-OUT WITH 3RD GRADERS IN THAILAND

  4. There are 10 items that suit for Thai 3rd graders from 19 items THE AVERAGE SCORE IS 5.36

  5. Item Problem Students Responses Remark Suit for 3rd grader 1.1 Calculate: 85-36+22-13 = ______ wrong/no response right total 38 18 56 (Calculate this problem to find out the result)

  6. Item Problem Students Responses Remark 2.1 Determine the order of calculations and write it down: The original test uses instead of x. It s quite difficult because even students can calculate the operations, order of operation still be difficult to Thai students, especially when the sentence also has multiplication and division symbol. 6 50 56 a x (b+c) :3

  7. Item Problem Students Responses Remark 2.2 Determine the order of calculations and write it down: The original test uses instead of x. It s quite difficult because even students can calculate the operations, order of operation still be difficult to Thai students, especially when the sentence also has multiplication and division symbol and variable. 0 56 56 X x 4 y x (z+5) (write down the number that show the order of calculation, the word order of calculation is the new word for students)

  8. Item Problem Students Responses Remark 3.1 Suit for 3rd graders Convert to millimeters: ( ) 6 cm = _____ mm (convert the given length to the length in millimeters) 30 26 56

  9. Item Problem Students Responses Remark Suit for 4th or 5th graders 5 The area of this figure is 3 14 42 56 Find the area of this figure 3 cm2 (area is in thai. Thai Third graders have no idea about )

  10. Item Problem Students Responses Remark Suit for 6th graders 6 Five years ago Charlie was N years old. How old is he now? 0 56 56 5 N

  11. Item 10 Problem Students Responses Remark Suit for 6th graders Find a pattern. What number should be placed instead of the question mark? 10 46 56 3 5 8 15 6 11 9 ? ? (the word pattern is hard to understand for students) 12 John tiled a balcony floor with square ceramic tiles. He used 28 tiles. There are 7 tiles in each row. How many tiles are there in each column? ( 28 7 ) 35 21 56

  12. Item Problem Students Responses Remark 13 A twelve-storey building has one entrance. There are six apartments on each floor. On which floor the apartment number 35 is located? 12 1 6 35 32 24 56
