Common Minor Pregnancy Problems and Treatments

Minor problems of pregnancy

These problems of pregnancy are not dangerous to mother
but can be troublesome on a day to day basis .most are
improved by simple treatments .
This include :
Backache :
Backache is due to laxity of spinal ligaments and weight of
pregnancy causing an exaggerated lumber lordosis
.Pregnancy also exacerbate the symptoms of a prolapsed
intervertebral disk .Advice should include maintenance of
correct posture, avoiding lifting heavy objects including
children avoiding high heels ,regular physiotherapy and
simple analgesia like paracetamol a lone or with codeine

Symphysis pubis dysfunction :
This is a painful condition usually occurring in the third
trimester. The symphysis pubis joint becomes loose
causing the two halves of the pelvis to rub on one another
when walking or moving .The condition will only improve
after delivery ,the management by simple analgesia ,a
low stability belt may be born.
Constipation
This due to the effect of progesterone in slowing gut
motility but the weight of graved uterus on the rectum
may contribute and also administered iron tablets. A high
fiber diet should be encouraged and mild laxative (non
stimulant) such as lactulose may be used

Hyper emesis gravid arum:
Nausea and vomiting are often common in first trimester
referred as morning sickness .It is worse in molar
pregnancy or multiple gestation and is probably related to
high circulating human chorionic gonadotrophin
(hCG),severe symptoms may lead to Mallory Weiss tears
,hematemesis ,dehydration and even malnutrition. In this
situation admission to hospital is mandatory and anti
emetics such as metoclopramide or chlor perazine are
given on regular basis. Intravenous hydration, parenteral
nutrition ,parenteral B complex vitamin in severe cases

Heartburn
This is very common. The symptoms are of burning in the
chest or discomfort, often on lying down. Heart burn is
caused by the weight effect of the pregnant uterus
preventing stomach emptying and the general relaxation
of the esophageal sphincter due to progesterone.
Management includes liquid antacids preparations,
stopping smoking, frequent light meals and lying with the
head propped up at night.

Varicose veins and piles
These both become worse in later pregnancy. Both are
thought to be due to relaxant effect of progesterone on
vascular smooth muscle and the dependent venous stasis
caused by the weight of the pregnant uterus on the
inferior vena cava. Neither condition should be treated
surgically in pregnancy. Piles may be improved with local
anesthetic anti irritant cream and a high fiber diet, rectal
examination should be carried if suspect rectal
carcinoma.
Varicose veins of legs may be symptomatically improved
with support stockings avoiding standing for long time
simple analgesia ,avoid trauma .

Carpal tunnel syndrome:
Compression neuropathies occur in pregnancy due to
increased soft tissue swelling .the median nerve where it
passes through the fibrous canal at the wrist before
entering the hand is most susceptible to compression ,the
symptom s include numbness, tingling and weakness of
the thumb and forefinger and often severe pain at night.
Diuretics are not adviced, simple analgesia and splinting of
the affected hand .Surgery is rarely performed during
pregnancy.
Edema of lower limb is common during pregnancy due to
increase capillary permeability which allows intravascular
fluid to leak to extravascular compartment.Odema is best
is best dealt with by frequent periods of rest with leg
elevation occasionally support stockings are
indicated.Genelized edema may be due to preeclampsia
.so you have measure blood pressure and urine for
protein.

Other minor disorders include
Itching
Urinary incontinence .
Nose bleed.
Headache.
Breast soreness.
Insomnia.
Striae gravid arum and chloasma

Pregnancy can bring about minor issues like backache, symphysis pubis dysfunction, constipation, hyperemesis gravidarum, heartburn, varicose veins, and piles. These problems are manageable with simple treatments including posture maintenance, analgesia, dietary adjustments, and support measures. Seek medical advice for severe symptoms.
