REBELLION BACON S REBELLION Nathaniel Bacon(29, poor farmer, fresh from England) -led rebellion Sir William Berkely (Gov of VA) who favored large planters/didn t protect farmers -Bacon raised army of volunteers (1676) led raids against Indian villages on VA frontiers (1,000 men) Defeated the governor s forces/burned Jamestown Bacon died (dysentery)& rebellion ended. Gov Berkely had 20 men hanged. 5/8
Rebellion showed 2 long-lasting disputes in colonial Virginia 1) sharp class differences between wealthy planters and poor farmers 2) colonial resistance to royal control 6/8
Nathaniel Bacon (why he is angry with the Gov) for having protected, favored, and emboldened the Indians against His Majesty s loyal subjects, never contriving, requiring, or appointing any due or proper means of satisfaction for their many invasions, robberies, and murders committed upon us. Governor Berkeley I have lived thirty-four years amongst you [Virginians], as uncorrupt and diligent as ever [a] Governor was, Bacon is a man of two years amongst you, his person and qualities unknown to most of you, and to all men else, by any virtuous act that ever I hear of I will take counsel of wiser men than myself, but Mr. Bacon has none about him but the lowest of the people.
