U.S. Citizens/ U.S. National
Ideally rising Juniors- may accept some
sophomores or seniors who have one
more year
 No freshmen or final semester
seniors
Seniors graduating in December may be
considered.
Eligibility
Research experience is not necessary but
is acceptable- will select half with
experience and half with little or no
experience
Those with limited resources are especially
urged to apply.
Those with limited research at their home
institutions are also urged to apply.
Qualifications
Must be here for the entire time period
Unfortunately, our schedule will not work
for those on the Quarter system.
Had to use the dates that work for our
faculty

Letters of recommendation are important-
Try to select someone who knows you
well.
 Diversity Statement- Optional but gives us
added information about who you are.
Can share any diversity 
related element
about yourself
No need to mention faculty or labs at CMU
in your statement.

You may want to include the following in your
statement
Your research interests
Your future goals, aspirations
Why you believe the SPUR program is a good fit
for you.
Why you think CMU is a good place for you to
get research experience.
Selection
Will be notified by February 16 if selected
Process- Committee selects finalist from
pool of applicants than the mentors select
based on their preferences and needs
Some labs need more advanced research
skills while others do not.
Compensation
$5,000 Stipend
Apartment style on campus housing: 2 or 3 bedroom
suites; some singles
Parking for vehicle is extra- Bus pass for employees
Have stoves for cooking in apartment
No Food Allowance- Meals for workshops and
meetings provided
Travel coverage – for now $200 but depends on
program funding

Weekly course in Research Methods and
Data Science
Weekly meeting with Primary Advisor
Participation in Lab meetings
Presentation on your work at the end of
the program- Lit Review or study Summary
Labs / Mentors
Represent the following areas:
Developmental, Cognitive,  Social
Neuroscience, Decision Making, Health
Psychology
Your mentor may be a faculty member,
Post Doc, Lab manager, or Grad Student.
Specific Project will be assigned based on
current research in the lab.
