Understanding the urgent need for action on climate change, this presentation by the Dalton Green Committee highlights the impacts of rising global temperatures and the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Massachusetts' mandated GHG reduction targets for 2025, 2030, 2040, and 2050 are outlined, emphasizing the significance of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 to safeguard the planet. The roadmap to achieving this goal involves developing a strategic Climate Action Plan, hiring consultants, analyzing baseline data, and implementing targeted actions in transportation, buildings, and energy sectors through community engagement and education.

  1. Preparing for our Future The Need and Benefits of a Climate Action Roadmap Presented by Dalton Green Committee

  2. The Need: Climate Change, Its Meaning and Impact Definition: - Weather changes and increasing temperatures caused by increasing Greenhouse Gases. Why the worry about a 1.5 C average global temperature rise? - - - At 1.5 C areas of the tropics become uninhabitable At 2 C most of the tropics, home to 3Billion people, become uninhabitable We are 1.1 C above the 1880 average global temperature What are some of the developing problems and challenges? - - - - - - More frequent and longer heat waves increased drought durations and frequency Increased storm intensity More frequent 100-yearfloods Rising sea levels with coastal flooding Population migrations

  3. GHG Targets mandated by MA Law Year% GHG Reduction 1990 Baseline Massachusetts Clean Energy and Climate Plan for 2025 and 2030 2020 20% The Secretary of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs has determined that the Commonwealth s economy-wide emissions limit will be a 33% reduction from 1990 level in 2025, and a 50% reduction in 2030. 2025 33% 2030 50% 2040 80% 2050 100% Achieving these goals will require large amounts of State and Federal money!

  4. The Importance of 50% less GHG Emissions by 2030 To save our planet we must achieve net-zero before 2070!

  5. How can Dalton achieve net-zero by 2050? We need a Strategic Plan! - Consider all issues and all groups of residents - Challenging given only 27 years left but possible Is a Climate Action Plan Recommended? - Requested with each grant application (DOER and Federal) - Indispensable for planning (Sustainability directors)

  6. Developing a Climate Action Plan Hire a consultant with expertise Sample Report items Determine Dalton s Baseline Our data collected and analyzed by consultant Report our baseline and actions needed to meet GHG goals Transportation - - Number of EVs register in town % of pop that drives to work alone Buildings Develop materials proven to maximize community engagement Create factsheets, Presentations and Surveys - - Energy use intensity Heating source Energy - - % renewable energy from grid Local solar capacity Develop Climate Action Plan through community engagement Educate community with the factsheets and presentations Gather informed opinions with surveys Prioritize issues and action items Develop detailed plan for each action item Facilitated meetings: subitems, timelines, coordinators, teams, funding Final Result: Dalton Climate Action Roadmap

  7. Benefits of an Action Roadmap: What have sustainability directors seen? More and often larger State and Federal grants Increased decision buy-in from the community and stakeholders Increased rate of achieving goals Important input to Town financial planning and Master Plan Thank you for considering this proposal Please vote in favor of Article 20 For a copy of this presentation, email tirwin@aptny.com
