Chancellor
A program called "Championing Textbook Affordability" offers a solution to reduce the financial burden on students by providing access to textbooks through a partnership with Follett Books+. Students register for courses, and the required materials are made available for rental at the Campus Bookstore. The program has evolved over time, initially being free for registered students for three years, but now becomes a cost-shared initiative with a reduced per unit cost negotiated with Follett. Despite the initial free offering, the program's approximate total cost per academic year is $7.5 million, covering only required materials. The funds for the program were initially sourced from state and federal funds targeted at COVID-19 recovery efforts, and as these funds are now depleted, SBCCD has taken steps to manage costs by negotiating lower rental fees. The program aims to support student success by alleviating textbook cost barriers.
