9. 26 March, our Independence Day, is the biggest state festival. It is a national holiday

10. The day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour The day begins with 31 gun salute

11. Early in the morning the President and the Prime Minister place floral wreaths on behalf of the nation

12. Then other leaders, political parties, diplomats, social and cultural organisations, educational institutions and freedom fighters pay homage to the martyrs

13. There are many cultural programmes throughout the day highlighting the heroic struggle and sacrifice in 1971

14. The country witness a spectacular parade of defence forces, border guards, police, ansars and VDP

15. In Bangabandhu National Stadium School children, scouts and girls guides take part in various displays

16. Exciting boat race is held in the river Buriganga

17. All major public buildings are illuminated with colourful lights
