  1. Cambyses Assessment Prep

  2. Assessment Prep L.O. to practise and prepare for the Cambyses assessment STARTER: Create 10 quiz questions and answers to test the rest of the class with.

  3. Question 3 - Exam practise Question 3 will be the first question where you will need to read and analyse the source you are given. You will need to use; DETAILS FROM THE SOURCE + YOUR OWN KNOWLEDGE to answer a question about the features and characteristics of a period/ event/ individual. It will depend what the question asks you! You use your own knowledge to build upon what you can tell from the source. 3. Using details from Passage A and your own knowledge, what can we learn about the nature of Cambyses as King (10). Key elements of Cambyses nature Cruel to the dead? Disrespectful of other leaders? Sacrilegious (behaves in a way that offends a religion). Brutal when he attacks the body? Mad for choosing to do such a thing? 5 marks = Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the historical periods studied. 5 marks = Use, analyse and evaluate ancient sources within their historical context. Support these ideas with your own knowledge!

  4. Question 3 - Exam practise Choose one of the two tasks to complete, based on the assessment question of; Using details from Passage A and your own knowledge, what can we learn about the nature of Cambyses as King? Option B: Have a go at writing the answer to the question out in full! A GREAT opportunity to have a practise before the real assessment. REMEMBER; 2-3 key pieces of information we can learn from the source. Expand upon these points using own knowledge. The 3rd point is optional. If you are running out of time, it is better to do 2 points in full, than 3 but the 3rd is rushed! Option A: Write out a detailed plan, in you books, of how you will answer this question in the assessment. REMEMBER; 2-3 key pieces of information that we can learn from the source. Expand upon these points with more of your own knowledge CHALLENGE: Create a generic How To guide for answering a Question 3 on the Persian Empire. Generic = it is a general guide, it focuses on how to answer the question, not the specific historical content.

  5. Question 4 exam practise. In your exam, Question 4 will be based on the given source and your own knowledge, you will have to use your understanding of the source and your understanding of the history to answer a conquest based around a Second Order Concept. The Second Order Concept will always be hinted at within the question you re asked. So, if our practise question is Using details from Passage A and your own knowledge, how different was Cambyses policy towards foreign peoples from that of Cyrus? ,you ll need to decide what your opinion is on the topic, use evidence from the source to support your argument, and decide which second order concepts are going to be relevant in this answer. - Which is the Second Order Concept that the question is leading you towards?? What is a second order concept?! These are concepts (ideas) that historians use to structure their study of history. They are; Chronology Similarity and Difference Change and Continuity Significance Cause and Effect. 5 marks = Use and analyse ancient sources within their historical context to make judgements and draw conclusions about historical events and historical periods studied. 5 marks = Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the historical periods studied 5 marks = Analydgementse and explain historical events and historical periods to arrive at substantiated jus.

  6. Question 4 exam practise. Passage A: No sooner had he (Cambyses) entered the palace of Amasis than he gave orders for his body (i.e. the body of Amasis) to be taken from the tomb where it lay. This done, he proceeded to have it treated with every possible indignity, such as lashing with whips, pricking with goads, and the plucking of its hairs. All this was done till the executioners were weary, and at last, as the corpse had been embalmed and would not gall to pieces under the blows, Cambyses ordered it to be burnt. This was an unholy thing to do, because the Persians believe that fire is a god, and never burn their dead. Herodotus , Histories, 3.16. Using details from passage A and your own knowledge, How different was Cambyses policy towards foreign peoples from that of Cyrus? Sentence starter = Herodotus account of Cambyses presents him as very different to his father, in terms of his treatment/ policy towards foreign people. The first point to consider when comparing Cambyses policy towards foreign people is REMEMBER this is yourargument and it doesn t necessarily have to agree with the statement completely. You might want to give a weighted argument, where you mostly agree/ disagree, but have the last part of your answer dedicated to evidence that does present the other side of the argument.
