The Buddy System ~ a cooperative arrangement whereby individuals are paired or teamed up and assume responsibility for one another's instruction, productivity, welfare, or safety.
So, I was asked to be a buddy for a beginning teacher. NOW WHAT? NOW WHAT?
The Administration, Buddy Teacher & District Mentor become a to ensure the success of the BT!
Mentoring at the District Level Every Beginning Teacher is assigned a District Mentor. Beginning Teachers are assigned a status BT1, BT2 or BT3. District Mentors also serve Alternatively Licensed BTs. Mentees are provided a local newsletter 3 times a year and a newsletter from DPI monthly. Mentees receive a weekly email containing their Mentor s schedule and a resource that features the topic of the month . Mentors visit BT classrooms to support their Mentee as needed and/or requested. The Mentor team manages the Beginning Teacher Store.

How Can the Mentor Help? Holding non-evaluative observations & providing feedback Working one-on-one with students Supplying classroom management tips Brainstorming goals for the PDP Grading papers Modeling lessons Finding resources Offering encouragement & emotional support Being a confidential sounding board Becoming a liaison between school & district Serving as classroom coverage for observations
How Can the Buddy Teacher Help? Offer personal & emotional support Assist in creating a reflective teacher Share knowledge of the curriculum Be a positive role model Provide a fresh perspective & insight regarding students Give helpful and constructive feedback Acknowledge achievements Set realistic expectations Be a link to other staff members & grade levels
