Beaver Brook Children's School aims to provide affordable, high-quality childcare and early education services in Wilmington and nearby towns. The program proposal includes creating a licensed childcare and Universal Prekindergarten Program to address the lack of licensed programs in the area. Special considerations involve flexible hours, weekend programs, financial assistance partnerships, and support for local industries. Community stakeholders support the initiative for its positive impact on children, families, and the community.

  1. BEAVER BROOK CHILDRENS SCHOOL, INC. BUSINESS REVIEW JUNE 1, 2021 PREPARED FOR THE WILMINGTON SELECT BOARD

  2. The Beaver Brook Childrens School vision is to provide affordable, high-quality childcare and early education services to Wilmington and nearby towns with the goal of promoting enrichment and social development for families in the community. VISION AND MISSION The Beaver Brook Children s School will realize its vision by creating a licensed childcare and Universal Prekindergarten Program under Vermont Act 166 that will provide full time care and education for approximately 30 children ages birth through five years in a safe and healthy environment. This program will also create 2-10 jobs, all of which will be above minimum wage.

  3. NEED FOR A NEW PROGRAM IN WILMINGTON Wilmington currently does not have ANY licensed childcare programs or family home programs. Dover has two licensed centers, but both remain full with extended waitlists. No licensed programs exist in Searsburg, Readsboro, Whitingham, Halifax, Jacksonville, or Marlboro. The new Beaver Brook Children s School program would provide early education services that are greatly needed in the Valley.

  4. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS BBCS will keep flexible hours, and hopes to provide weekend and extended day programs to support local families who work seasonal positions or in the restaurants/hospitality industry. BBCS will participate in Vermont s Financial Assistance Program for families, and partner with local public schools as a Universal Prekindergarten Program both these partnerships will decrease tuition rates for families. BBCS may also pursue drop in weekend care to support second home owners and out of state vacationers, in turn supporting the town s tourism and hospitality industries. BBCS is on the Moover route, and will draw more foot traffic and attention to the Old School Community Center. BBCS anticipates steady enrollment and reliable cash flow, helping to create a sustainable anchor for the Old School Community Center.

  5. Response from Community Stakeholder: As a long-term educator and administrator in the WSWSU, I have noticed that there are only a very limited number of childcare and preschool programs available in our region. I ve advocated for over 15 years with regional partners and human service agencies to work towards increasing the childcare and high quality preschool program options for families. These programs have multiple positive effects for the children and families they serve (such as socialization, social emotional learning, foundations of literacy and mathematics for children, and economically for families being able to have care-givers return to work more readily). The opportunity to provide a high quality program at the Old School Enrichment Center (O-SEC) will offer a centralized location with a public transportation (Moover) option to help make this more accessible to our hard working families. -Tate Erikson, Director of Special Education, WSWSU
