The AfriWon Research Collaborative (ARC) offers a pilot program to provide mentorship for family physicians in sub-Saharan Africa. The program aims to support participants in developing research protocols through online modules and mentorship relationships. Participants will gain an understanding of the ARC program, the roles of mentors and mentees, and strategies for effective mentoring. The curriculum includes 10 modules with podcasts, reading materials, and deliverables reviewed by peer and faculty mentors. Mentoring in ARC involves a partnership between experienced peers and faculty guiding participants in developing research skills.

Objectives By the end of the presentation, pilot participants should be able to: Understand the overall ARC program & expectations Recognize the value and roles of mentees and mentors Share challenges to effective mentoring relationships, strategies to address them Initiate a research mentoring relationship Consent to join ARC, take baseline survey, and be ready to start!

ARC Mentorship Introduction Mentoring is a partnering relationship between two or more individuals The knowledge-gradient may not necessarily be one way (mentor-mentee) Focus of this project is mentoring young African FPs on developing skills required to write a research protocol de-novo Mentors in ARC are more experienced peers and faculty who will guide and support you through this process

  7. STRUCTURE OF ARC MENTORSHIP Initial pairing is based on research interests and skills, may form teams The mentors are encouraged to use motivational interviewing in their mentorship approach; goal to make research enjoyable & support you!

ARC Mentorship Logistics PRMs primarily guide and support the PPs through development of the research protocol FRMs are primarily supporting PRMs as they learn mentorship; however each research team may be slightly different ARC Baseline expectations: PRM check-ins with PP on a weekly basis (e.g. WhatsApp text) Monthly call between PP, PRM, and FRM to discuss PP s research work in progress

  12. First meeting with your mentor Introduce yourself briefly Who you are, where you practice, academic qualifications, what you are working on Also find out who they are! Be specific on the areas you need mentoring on Reflect on and write down goals in advance Agree on the platform, timing, and expectations for communication and feedback Teams may choose to write down mentee/mentor contract Imperial college of science, 2015

Obstacles to successful mentoring relationship Unclear or unrealistic expectations Time pressure Poor interpersonal / communication skills Difficulty with feedback (give/receive) Conflict / differing opinions with local advisor Managing differences Nationality, gender, race, primary language, access to resources, available time to dedicate, organizational context Kathy Kram, 2014

Tips for a success: Send a prior notification before your meetings as an organizing principle (specifying what you need help on and confirming availability) Leave space at the beginning of each meeting for your mentor to articulate what is on his/her mind Summarize next steps at the end of the meeting Schedule or confirm follow up appointment with mentor Mentoring Resource Center, Wake Forest University 2018

  15. Tips for a success (cont.) Email afterwards succinctly summarizing big takeaways, and expressing thanks Record and follow up on suggestions from mentoring sessions If suggestions do not work out, present your mentor with several potential alternative strategies Use your mentor s preferred form of communication Be respectful of your mentors time: be punctual for meetings, share progress & challenges on goals relevant to your work together Mentoring resource centre, Wake Forest University 2018
