So what can you do to make work joyful whether you work in an office or at home and are juggling children and partners!
COVID has made us realise the importance of heart to heart and human to human connection, sharing and being vulnerable. Make the effort to have a Joy Buddy who can be your resilience and accountability buddy. Talk to them about your feelings they are the secret to busting stress! Be vulnerable in a safe environment.
Life is not all about feeling good. It s about being good at feeling! If we make ourselves numb...we miss the warning signs of impending loneliness or mental health issues! ASK each other about feelings and listen without judgment.
How do you create a safe environment where people can be vulnerable and authentic? Really care about someone else Ask questions about them Be present as they answer Observe rather than judge Listen for the feelings behind the words Respond to those feelings Seek to understand their perspective Avoid sharing your opinion unless they ask! Ask what they need Be kind
The following pages give you skills you can use at work and home Your partners and children crave connection and a safe space in which they can be real, vulnerable, seen and heard. Control the things you can control and focus on doing what you can. Acknowledge how you and others are feeling and give yourselves and them permission to feel whatever it is. Ask them what would help them feel better
1. Feel Good About Yourself A person who feels good about themselves can focus on helping others feel good about themselves! This makes for better mental health and Joy! The most important thing in life is how you feel about yourself - because that affects every other aspect of your life - especially your performance. Emotional Intelligence = Know yourself; manage yourself and manage relationship.
2. Value Feelings Success in business is always about feelings especially during COVID times. The way we feel about each other, a product, organization or person influences how we behave and informs our decisions about how we spend, or who we conduct business with. How do people feel around you? Do you actively focus on helping others feel good about themselves? Our research shows that people are less likely to buy from a company with an employee they perceive as rude, whether the rudeness is directed at them or at other employees. Witnessing just a single unpleasant interaction leads customers to generalize about other employees, the organization, and even the brand. (HBR) The Price of Incivility
3. Create a Safe Environment Create an environment that is fear free and joy filled - at home or at work. Fear inhibits performance, creativity, stops people feeling safe and blocks the ability to experience joy while working. Address uncertainty directly and be aware of the impact of isolation, disconnection and a sense of not belonging especially now. Connect and care.
4. Understand that work + joy = profitability Focus on helping people feel cared for, secure and safe because Joy at work matters - it IS the new competitive advantage! Amanda Gore When compared with industry competitors at the company level, organizations with more than four engaged employees for every one actively disengaged employee saw 2.6 times more growth in earnings per share than those with less engaged workers. (Hay Group) 2.6 times more growth in earnings per share
5. Recognize and Acknowledge Good Job! The #1 thing people want in life is recognition and acknowledgement . Being acknowledged makes people feel good about themselves. It means you see them; they are noticed; their contribution is valued. This is especially important while working remotely. Appreciation is a fundamental human need. Employees respond to appreciation expressed through recognition of their good work because it confirms their work is valued. When employees and their work are valued, their satisfaction and productivity rises, and they are motivated to maintain or improve their good work. From: The enthusiastic employee how companies profit by giving workers what they want. Give people TA DA's; a thumbs up. a high five just celebrate changes and achievements in some way. With the team and individually.
6. Keep Learning Feeling your boss cares enough to want you to grow and develop is a key ingredient for joy at work. The brain loves change - it needs change to grow and develop. Seek to grow, learn and develop at work. Take all the opportunities offered. Ask for mentoring and guidance if you are not offered it. Choose to see the opportunities of COVID times. Find them!
7. Be Grateful Gratitude is the foundation for joy - put on your gratitude glasses so that you find things for which to be grateful in everyone and everything - it transforms life - and work. Gratitude reframes everything that happens in your life. It is impossible to have a heart full of misery and a heart full of gratitude at the same time.
8. Be a Good Finder Be a good finder! Find good in everyone and every situation - there is always something good. You may have to search deeply at times but you will find something! And that habit will change your life. People don't like working with pessimistic, energy suckers who live in fear. Research shows that when people work with a positive mind- set, performance on nearly every level productivity, creativity, engagement improves. Harvard Business Review
9. Have a Purpose; give people a purpose; create your own purpose Find some purpose and meaning in the work you do. Of all the things that can boost emotions, motivation, and perceptions during a workday, the single most important is making progress in meaningful work. The power of small wins (HBR)
10. Feel; be authentic; be vulnerable Life is not just about feeling good. Life is about being good at feeling. If we can be present; aware of what we are feeling; address the cause of those feelings (a story); and consciously choose a different story with a different feeling everything changes. Opening your heart; feeling safe enough to be authentic and vulnerable connects you to others at a human level and makes an astonishing difference to performance and to the feeling work that you love your work, your leader and your colleagues.
