Academic Degree Requirements and Core Curriculum Overview
Academic degree requirements at Cal Lutheran include a minimum of 124 credits with a GPA of 2.0 or above, completion of upper-division courses, and residency requirements. Academic Basics Parts of a Degree Degree minimums: 124 credits are required 40 credits of upper division (300, 400 level classes) 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) overall, in your major and in any minor General Education or Core 21 At least one major (with required emphasis or supporting courses, if applicable) Residency Requirement: 30 of your final 40 credits must be at Cal Lutheran. In addition 33% of the under division courses in your major must be completed here.
Academic Basics Non-negotiables The following requirements must be met as stated. They may not be petitioned and the University does not round numbers up. 124 credits required for the degree 40 credits of upper division credits 2.0 GPA overall for the degree and in every major or any minor
Core 21 The goals of Core 21 are to enable students: to become proficient in analytical and critical thinking and to be able to process, transform and communicate information; to be able to comprehend issues from a variety of perspectives and to understand how different academic disciplines ask questions about the world; to understand themselves as both heirs and creators of history; to understand the forces that have shaped their cultural heritage and appreciate the diversity of values and viewpoints in the United States and the world; to be able to integrate information and moral reflection in order to develop creative solutions to new problems.
Proficiencies Written Communication English Composition ENGL 111 ENGL 110 is the required prerequisite Writing Intensive One approved course A lot of majors have a course that meets this requirement Speaking Intensive (can be satisfied with another Core course) One approved course
Perspectives Humanities Natural Sciences One History Course Two Courses with Labs One Literature Course 90 Credits in transfer Two labs waived One Philosophy Course 30 credits in transfer One lab waived Visual and Performing Arts RLTH 100 and One Upper Division Religion Two Courses, one Participatory RLTH 100 waived with 60 credits in transfer One course must be 2 credits or more Health and Well-Being Social Sciences One PE Activity Two courses Must be from different departments
Cultures & Civilizations and Integrated Studies Cultures and Civilizations (can be satisfied with another Core course) Global Perspectives One Course US Diversity One Course Integrated Studies Capstone requirement in your major

A final note on Core 21 advising I always start with a student by explaining why Core 21 is important and that it is not just a set of hurdles to avoid or get through. It is an expression of our Liberal Arts roots and an reflective of what faculty believe are important to include as part of a Cal Lutheran degree. The course they did not know existed or thought they would hate can be the class that helps them find a new purpose and direction in life. It is never good for a student to put off the requirements they do not like or do not want to take. I help a student identify which requirements will be completed in the major or minor. Students who take ENGL 110, 111, RLTH 100 in their first year are more successful.
