General General information information about about Latvia Latvia It is one of the Baltic states; and is bordered by Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, Belarus to the southeast, and shares a maritime border with Sweden to the west. Latvia covers an area of 64,589 km2 , with a population of 1.9 million.

  3. CITIES The capital and largest city is Riga. Other large cities are Daugavpils, Liepaja, Jelgava Jurmala, Ventspils, Rezekne, Ogre, Valmiera, Jekabpils.

  4. Languages The official language is Latvian. This country, about 2 million inhabitants is home to several linguistic communities. 33.5% of the citizens speak Russian and 4.1% speak Belarusian. Ukrainian is spoken by 3% of the population, Polish by 2.2%, Lithuanian by 1.7%.

  5. CLIMATE The country has a temperate seasonal climate, tempered by the influence of the sea. There are spring, summer, autumn, winter. Summers are often hot, with daytime temperatures of 25 C. Winters are relatively cold (-6 -> -15 on average in January).

  6. Education Education in Latvia is divided into basic, secondary and higher education. The state provides secondary full education. Children from the age of 6 or 7 are admitted to the 1st grade. Basic education is designed for 9 years, then optional school education can be continued up to 12 years. Basic education in Latvia is compulsory. All children living in Latvia must attend school from the age of 7 until the 9th grade or until the age of 17.This is the minimum general education that qualifies for secondary education or employment.

  7. NATURE Most of the country is composed of lowland plains and hills. In a typical Latvian landscape, a mosaic of vast forests alternates with fields, farmsteads, and pastures. There is a lot of rivers and lakes in Latvia.The longest rivers are the Daugava, the Gauja and the largest lakes are Lubans and Raznas.

  8. TRADITIONAL FOOD TRADITIONAL FOOD Grey peas Pork chop Cold soup Rye bread Aukst zupa is a Latvian cold soup. It is made with beets, cucumbers, kefir, hard-boiled eggs,dills and milk sausage. Pel kie zir i ar spe i is the national dish of Latvia. This type of stew is made with local grey peas, fried onions, and diced speck. Rupjmaize is a traditional Latvian bread consisting of whole-grain rye. It has a unique flavor that is both sour and sweet. Karbon de is thinly pounded pork cutlet that is coated in a combination of flour, beaten eggs

  9. Food Food Actually, there are a lot of different dishes we eat traditionally in everyday life. They are made of vegetables, meat, fruits, and dairy products. Of course, we love different sweet dishes and pies, too.

  11. Places Places We have a lot of places to visit. It depends on your aim of traveling and wishes. Every city or village has its own charm, history, and places to see.

  12. CULTURE CULTURE Traditional Latvian folklore dates back well over a thousand years. More than 1.2 million texts and 30,000 melodies of folk songs have been identified. We have national traditions and festivals, too. Ligo is our favorite festival. The Latvian Song and Dance Festival is an important event in Latvian culture and social life. It has been held since 1873. Theatre, scenography, choir music, and classical music have become the most notable branches of Latvian culture.
